"बदतमीज़ दिल, माने ना, माने ना": In a massive embarrassment for Pakistan, a cricket player was fined for misbehaving with female staff at Kandy’s Golden Crown Hotel, as the team crashed out of the T20 World Cup after a poor campaign

Pakistan cricket’s already difficult T20 World Cup journey has now been overshadowed by a fresh controversy that reportedly took place off the field during the tournament in Sri Lanka. According to media reports, a member of Pakistan’s national squad was fined by team management after allegedly misbehaving with a female housekeeping staff member at the hotel where the team was staying.

The incident, reported by Telecom Asia Sport, is said to have occurred during the Super Eight stage of the competition. Pakistan’s players were staying at the Golden Crown Hotel in Kandy at the time, a well-known property frequently used by international teams touring Sri Lanka.
Sources cited in the report stated that a situation developed inside the hotel involving one of the Pakistan players and a female staff member responsible for housekeeping duties. The report claims that the player behaved inappropriately toward the employee, which caused immediate concern and led to a tense situation within the hotel premises.
According to the report, the issue escalated when the hotel staff member reacted strongly and called out for assistance. Her distress reportedly drew the attention of other employees working nearby, who quickly stepped in to help and assess the situation. The matter was soon reported to the Pakistan team’s management, bringing the incident to the attention of team manager Naveed Cheema.

“Before Pakistan’s last Super Eight match against Sri Lanka, a Pakistan World Cup squad player misbehaved with a female housekeeping staff,” Telecom Asia Sport reported while citing its sources.
The report further explained the sequence of events inside the hotel. “shouted and called for help, after which hotel staff came for her rescue and reported the matter to Pakistan team manager Naveed Cheema.”
Once the complaint reached the team management, discussions reportedly took place between hotel authorities and Pakistan’s team officials. According to the report, senior officials from the Golden Crown Hotel were upset and concerned about what had taken place within their property. The hotel management is said to have wanted strict action against the player involved.
However, the matter did not proceed to formal legal action during the tournament. Instead, the issue was addressed internally between the hotel authorities and Pakistan’s team management. As part of this process, Naveed Cheema reportedly apologised to the hotel management on behalf of the player involved in the incident.
|
The report further stated: “The top management of Golden Crown Hotel wanted the matter to be dealt with strongly, but Cheema apologised on behalf of the player and fined him for misbehaviour.”
Following this apology, the Pakistan team management imposed a financial penalty on the player concerned. The fine was intended as disciplinary action for the alleged misconduct and helped calm tensions at the time. As a result, the situation was temporarily settled while the tournament was still underway.
Despite the internal resolution, the controversy has not completely disappeared. The identity of the cricketer involved in the alleged incident has not been revealed publicly. However, reports suggest that the matter may still be reviewed once the team returns home. According to those reports, the player could be asked to appear before the Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary committee, which will examine the circumstances surrounding the complaint.
The possibility of further action means the situation remains unresolved at a broader administrative level. If the board decides to conduct a formal review, the cricketer involved could face additional disciplinary measures depending on the findings.
The controversy has emerged at a particularly sensitive time for Pakistan cricket. The team’s performance in the T20 World Cup itself has already been a subject of disappointment among supporters and cricket analysts. Pakistan failed to secure a place in the tournament’s semifinals despite winning their final Super Eight match against Sri Lanka.

In that match, Pakistan managed to defeat Sri Lanka by five runs. However, even that victory was not enough to push the team into the next stage of the tournament because qualification ultimately depended on net run-rate calculations. Pakistan’s overall numbers were not strong enough to secure a semifinal berth.
The fresh off-field controversy has also revived memories of earlier disciplinary issues involving members of Pakistan’s touring squads in recent years. One such case occurred last year when batter Haider Ali was briefly detained by Manchester Police during a Pakistan Shaheens tour of England following rape allegations. The player was later released after authorities said there was insufficient evidence to pursue the case.
Another earlier incident involved team masseur Malang Ali, who was reportedly fined during a tour of Malaysia following allegations of misconduct with a female staff member.
While the current case remains unclear in many respects, especially because the player’s identity has not been disclosed, reports suggest that the matter is far from closed. Once the Pakistan team returns home from the tournament, the individual involved may face additional scrutiny.
Reports also indicate that the player is likely to appear before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) disciplinary committee, which could consider further punishment if the allegations are confirmed during its review process.
For now, the episode has added another layer of controversy to an already disappointing World Cup campaign for Pakistan. The team’s inability to reach the semifinals after missing out on net run-rate despite defeating Sri Lanka by five runs in their final Super Eight match had already drawn criticism from fans and observers. The emergence of this off-field issue has further intensified the scrutiny surrounding Pakistan cricket.
