"ना करें जनाब, ना करें": Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faces viral mockery after inaugurating a fake Pizza Hut in Sialkot, prompting the real brand to file a trademark complaint and deny ties to the bogus restaurant

For a moment, it looked like Pakistan had gained another international food franchise. But, as is often the case, the celebration did not last long.

Pakistan Defence Minister Cuts Ribbon at Bogus Pizza Hut in Sialkot, Real Chain Cries “Not Our Pizza”
Pakistan Defence Minister Cuts Ribbon at Bogus Pizza Hut in Sialkot, Real Chain Cries “Not Our Pizza”

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif found himself at the centre of an unexpected comedy when he inaugurated what looked like a brand-new Pizza Hut outlet in Sialkot Cantonment on January 21, 2026. Videos of the event spread rapidly across social media, showing the senior minister performing the classic ribbon-cutting ritual with full confidence. However, in a twist that felt less like governance and more like slapstick, the restaurant turned out to be completely fake.

The scene had all the ingredients of a grand opening. There were decorations, a large crowd, media cameras flashing from every angle, and the defence minister smiling proudly for photographs. In the images, Khawaja Asif can be seen holding scissors, cutting the ribbon, and officially “opening” the outlet as applause rang out. For a moment, it looked like Pakistan had gained another international food franchise. But, as is often the case, the celebration did not last long.

Soon after the photos and videos flooded the internet, Pizza Hut Pakistan stepped in with a reality check. The company issued a public disclaimer clarifying that the outlet inaugurated by the defence minister was never authorised. According to the company, the restaurant was “unauthorised” and “falsely using the Pizza Hut name and branding.” Despite having the familiar red colour scheme, logo, and overall look of an authentic Pizza Hut, the outlet had no official connection to the brand.

Pizza Hut Pakistan did not stop there. As the visuals continued to circulate online, the company released a public notice distancing itself completely from the Sialkot Cantonment restaurant. It categorically stated that the outlet had no permission to operate under the Pizza Hut name or branding and was not part of its official network.

The company further explained that the restaurant was not affiliated with Yum! Brands and did not follow international recipes, quality standards, or safety protocols. Pizza Hut Pakistan also confirmed that it had filed a trademark complaint with the relevant authorities to address the misuse of its brand.

In its official statement, the company said, “Pizza Hut Pakistan informs our valued customers that an unauthorised outlet falsely using the Pizza Hut name and branding has recently opened in Sialkot Cantonment,” making it clear that customers had been misled.

The statement went on to clarify, “This outlet is not associated with Pizza Hut Pakistan, or Yum! Brands. It does not follow Pizza Hut International recipes, quality protocols, food safety and operational standards.” The company added that it had “formally filed a complaint with the relevant authorities to stop the misuse of our trademark and ensure immediate action.”

Pizza Hut Pakistan also reminded the public that it currently operates only 16 official outlets across the country, with 14 located in Lahore and two in Islamabad. There is no official Pizza Hut presence in Sialkot. Customers were urged to verify store locations through the company’s official website to avoid confusion.

Reiterating its commitment to customers, Pizza Hut Pakistan stated that “your trust matters deeply to us,” and advised people to rely only on verified outlets for the “authentic Pizza Hut experience.” The company again emphasised that it operates only 16 official stores nationwide and none in Sialkot.

Meanwhile, Khawaja Asif, who has long been a favourite subject for Indian meme-makers, was welcomed into a global meme festival. Social media platforms, especially X, quickly turned the episode into a running joke. Users mocked the irony of a defence minister inaugurating a restaurant that could not defend its own brand authenticity.

One user summed it up neatly by writing, “One ribbon cut, one statement issued. That has to be some kind of record,” while another joked, “When even Pizza Hut says ‘Not our slice of the pie’.” A third user quipped, “Defence Minister inaugurated an outlet that couldn’t defend its own brand authenticity.”

Some users compared the incident to past political blunders. One post read, “From national security to pizza security, turns out the latter needed better verification.” Others focused on the ceremony itself, with one comment stating, “The ribbon-cutting photos are the best advertisement for why due diligence matters,” followed by a laughing emoji.

The incident also raised serious questions among users about how a senior cabinet minister could attend the inauguration of a franchise without verifying whether it was genuine. One user wrote, “Khawaja Asif, the so-called defence minister, ends up inaugurating a fake Pizza Hut franchise,” adding that the episode reflected poorly on governance standards.

Reactions in India

Across the border, Indian social media users also joined in, mixing humour with criticism. Many described the incident as symbolic of deeper institutional issues. In a widely shared post, a user commented that in a country facing daily security challenges, the episode offered “unintentional comic relief.” Another labelled it “peak Pakistan,” pointing to what they saw as a lack of basic verification.

One Indian user wrote, “As an Indian watching this unfold, I genuinely thought it was satire. Turns out, it was governance.” Another remarked that the fact the company itself had to clarify the outlet was fake made it a “case study in zero verification.”

Several commenters highlighted the irony of the defence minister’s role. “Imagine being in charge of national defence but not checking whether the restaurant you are inaugurating is real,” one Indian user wrote, neatly capturing the mood.

So far, neither Khawaja Asif nor Pakistan’s defence ministry has issued a public response to the controversy. The outlet at the centre of the matter has also remained silent, leaving behind a story that combined politics, pizza, and a lesson in verification that will likely be remembered far longer than the ribbon-cutting itself.
