Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur saw violence as stones were hurled at a Durga immersion in Nayakheda near a mosque, leaving a youth injured, idol vandalised, protests and police action followed

On Wednesday, 1st October, what should have been a devotional and peaceful religious celebration turned tense in Nayakheda village of Burhanpur district, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred during the annual Durga idol immersion ceremony (Durga Visarjan). According to reports, a “frenzied Muslim mob threw stones at Hindus who were playing DJ during the immersion procession.”

This sudden outbreak of violence left one youth seriously injured and resulted in the vandalisation of the idol, sparking outrage among the local Hindu community.
The stone-pelting began as the procession moved near a local mosque, where objections were raised about the sound from the DJ. What started as verbal arguments soon escalated into intense stone-throwing. Amid the chaos, a young man was hurt, and the idol of Goddess Durga, which devotees were preparing to immerse, was damaged — an act that further inflamed religious sentiments.
In response to the incident, Hindu organizations launched overnight protests, demanding justice and immediate police action. Protesters insisted on the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the attackers. “VHP leader Shankar Chauhan stated that the police allowed the idol immersion but he was assaulted when he attempted to complain.” His statement highlighted the deep frustration among the community leaders, who felt that despite being allowed to carry out their tradition, they faced hostility and violence.

As news spread, hundreds of people gathered outside the Navara police station late at night, refusing to disperse until strict action was taken. Activists from Hindu groups declared that they would not end their demonstrations unless the culprits were identified and arrested. Around 9:30 pm, Manju Dadu, the MLA of Nepanagar, reached the protest site to appeal for calm. She urged the community to maintain peace, assuring them that justice would follow. Following her request, many protesters slowly began to return home, and the situation began to stabilize.
Authorities downplayed the incident, describing it as a minor disagreement that was “managed promptly.” However, acknowledging the seriousness of religious sensitivities, Superintendent of Police Devendra Kumar Patidar assured that the situation was now “entirely stable” but additional security measures were being taken.
To prevent any further flare-ups, the administration deployed increased police forces across Nayakheda village and adjoining areas. Patrolling was intensified, with law enforcement officers maintaining a strict vigil to ensure peace and order. Officials also confirmed that the perpetrators were being identified and strict action would soon be enforced.
The Burhanpur incident adds to a series of communal disturbances witnessed in Madhya Pradesh in recent years, especially during Hindu religious events. Similar clashes have been reported in other regions, including Vidisha, where a Kali idol procession was attacked with stones. Such recurring episodes reflect a concerning pattern of communal tensions that surface during religious gatherings.
