"दीदी ओ दीदी… खेला होच्छे": A major crisis hits West Bengal as a Kolkata bank freezes three TMC accounts holding ₹440 crore after rebel leaders Aroop Biswas and Ritabrata Banerjee demanded a police probe into illegal funding

A major political and financial crisis has hit West Bengal. A private bank in Kolkata has frozen all debit operations on three specific bank accounts connected to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This massive regulatory action occurred right after a group of rebel TMC Member of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) contacted local law enforcement authorities. The lawmakers formally requested a comprehensive official investigation to uncover the true origins of the political party's substantial financial reserves.
This significant move developed after 10 prominent TMC MLAs decided to align themselves with the Leader of the Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee. Together, this faction submitted an official complaint directly to the cybercrime police station, which operates under the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. In their written submission, the lawmakers explicitly demanded the formal registration of a First Information Report (FIR) alongside a meticulous, deep-dive inquiry into the nature of these specific bank accounts.

Massive Funds Locked Down as Police Investigation Begins
The three targeted bank accounts collectively hold an enormous sum of approximately ₹440 crore. Under the newly enforced debt freeze, the bank has completely blocked all types of withdrawals and outward transactions. This restriction effectively locks the capital in place, though the accounts are still permitted to receive incoming credits. Following standard legal protocols, the financial institution formally notified the officer-in-charge of the Bidhannagar city police cybercrime station about this restrictive action on Friday, June 19, 2026.
Within the text of their official complaints, the dissenting MLAs raised serious questions regarding the primary sources of the massive deposits resting within the party's accounts. They urged law enforcement to trace the history of the financial transactions that have moved through these channels over time. Specifically, one of the filed complaints openly questioned whether these vast sums of money were originally gathered from unauthorized or unlawful activities. The document pointedly noted suspicions around systemic cut-money collections, the illegal diversion of public development funds, and the direct accumulation of proceeds from various financial scams.
The depth of the legal complaint is reflected in the exact words of the lawmakers, who noted: “It has come to my knowledge through reliable circumstances and surrounding developments that certain funds, arising out of illegal activities, including misuse of influence, dishonest financial dealings and suspected unlawful collection of money, may have been routed and subsequently deposited into bank accounts,”

A Divided Leadership Fights for Control Over Millions
The financial drama intensified further when Aroop Biswas, a prominent TMC leader and the former treasurer of the political organization, also took direct action. Biswas independently drafted a formal letter to the bank management demanding an immediate freeze on the party's financial accounts. In his communication, he specifically drew attention to the severe internal fracturing that has compromised both the Parliamentary and the legislative wings of the ruling party. Seeking to protect the wealth from unauthorized access during this period of high instability, Biswas wrote: “In order to safeguard the funds of the organisation. I request your good office to maintain the status quo and refrain from permitting any debit transactions or changes in operational mandates in respect of the following account,”
This unprecedented banking freeze highlights a rapidly widening rift within the heart of the political party. As internal stability fractures, two highly competitive rebel factions have openly emerged. One faction is firmly led by the former minister Aroop Biswas, while the rival faction is commanded by the Leader of the Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee. Both sides are now locked in a fierce, high-stakes battle to seize ultimate authority over the entire organizational framework and the massive financial apparatus of the party.
