TMC leader Bullet Khan arrested for abetting BLO Hamimul Islam’s suicide in Murshidabad, exposing a debt feud that shattered the party’s politically charged anti-SIR narrative blaming work pressure

In a significant turn of events that has exposed a deep political rift in West Bengal, authorities have arrested a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader in connection with the tragic suicide of a school headmaster. The arrest has not only brought justice closer for the grieving family but has also dismantled a politically charged narrative that sought to blame the death on administrative election work.

A Teacher’s Tragic End
The incident centers on the heartbreak of 47-year-old Hamimul Islam, a respected figure in his community. Hamimul was not only the headmaster of a state-funded secondary school for boys in the Paikmarichar area of Murshidabad but also served as a Booth Level Officer (BLO), a role vital to the democratic process.
On the 10th of January, Hamimul Islam was found dead within the very school where he educated young minds. He had committed suicide, leaving behind a family and a community in shock. The tragedy was compounded when his wife stepped forward with a harrowing complaint: her husband had been under immense distress, not because of his work, but because of threats and financial betrayal.
The Arrest and the Real Cause
Acting on the family's complaint, the police moved swiftly. On the 12th of January, authorities took Bulet (Bullet) Khan, a known leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC), into custody.
While initial rumors swirled, the police investigation shed light on the truth, revealing a personal dispute that had spiraled out of control. It was discovered that Hamimul Islam was deeply upset because the accused, Bullet Khan, had failed to repay a massive debt of Rs 20 lakh. The situation turned dire when Khan allegedly not only refused to return the money but escalated to threatening to murder the headmaster. Pushed to the brink by financial loss and fear for his life, Hamimul took the extreme step.
A senior official confirmed the development, stating, “A person named Bullet Khan has been arrested. He is known to be a Trinamool Congress worker. An FIR (First Information Report) has been filed based on the complaints lodged by the family of the deceased BLO. Investigation into the matter is on.”Political Spin vs. Reality
Before the police uncovered the truth, the narrative surrounding Hamimul’s death had been heavily politicized. TMC leaders in Murshidabad were quick to blame the suicide on alleged pressure arising from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls [Source: The Hindu]. The party went as far as agitating outside the office of the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kolkata, attempting to link the tragedy to administrative burden.
This narrative, however, crumbled with Khan's arrest. The revelation that the suicide was driven by personal harassment and debt rather than professional pressure has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders.
Opposition Condemns "Manufactured Narrative"
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at the ruling party for using a personal tragedy to fuel a political agenda. Amit Malviya, a senior BJP leader, condemned the TMC for politicizing the unfortunate event and wrongly assigning blame to the SIR drive.
Highlighting the stark contrast between the TMC's claims and the police findings, Malviya stated that immediately after the incident, “Mamata Banerjee’s ecosystem of habitual liars and disinformation peddlers pushed the narrative that he had died by suicide due to pressure from SIR-related work.”
He further criticized the media coverage and the orchestrated protests, noting, “On Monday, the TMC even orchestrated a protest outside the Election Commission office in Kolkata. Large sections of a compromised media echoed this manufactured version without asking questions.”
Pointing directly to the accused's political affiliation, Malviya added, “This is how Mamata Banerjee and the TMC distort the truth and subvert facts to suit their political agenda.”
BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar echoed these sentiments, expressing dismay at the manipulation of public sentiment. He remarked, “This is the real face of Trinamool Congress. They are misleading people regarding the death of BLOs. They are intimidating people through deception,” referring to the broader implications of the development.
Legal Proceedings Underway
As the investigation proceeds, the legal process has begun. Hamimul Islam hailed from the village of Alaipur, located in Bhagwangola Block II, while the accused, Bullet Khan, resides in the Murshidabad district near the Ranitala police station.
Following his arrest, Khan was produced before the Lalbagh sub-divisional court, which heard the case and remanded him to police custody for five days. As the community mourns the loss of a teacher, the focus now shifts to the courtroom, where the true extent of the alleged harassment will be examined.
