"Change is the only constant": In a historic shift for Patna, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar confirms his move to the Rajya Sabha as the BJP prepares to lead Bihar, while his son Nishant Kumar eyes a direct role in state politics

Bihar may soon witness an important shift in its political leadership as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has indicated that he plans to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The announcement has intensified political discussions across the state and within the ruling alliance about who might lead the government if Nitish Kumar steps down from his current role.

The speculation gathered pace on Thursday, 5th March, when Nitish Kumar shared a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In his post, he openly stated his intention to seek membership in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India’s Parliament. The message also carried an assurance that his relationship with the people of Bihar would remain unchanged and that he would continue contributing to the state’s development.
In the post, he wrote, “… I seek to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the elections being held this time. I want to assure you with complete honesty that my relationship with you will continue in the future as well, and my resolve to work together with you to build a developed Bihar will remain steadfast. The new government that will be formed will have my full cooperation and guidance.”
The statement immediately sparked political conversations about whether Bihar is preparing for a change in leadership. While Nitish Kumar did not directly announce his resignation as Chief Minister, his remarks suggested that a new government may soon take shape in the state.
A screengrab of the Chief Minister’s post quickly circulated online, further fueling speculation.
Earlier, on Wednesday, 4th March, leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) had already hinted that Nitish Kumar might file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. If that happens, it could open the door for a new Chief Minister to take charge in Bihar.
Media reports indicate that the next Chief Minister is likely to come from the BJP, which is the largest party in the ruling alliance. However, both BJP and JD(U) have avoided making any official announcement regarding this possibility.
Political observers also note that the process may not happen immediately. Some Rajya Sabha members from Bihar are scheduled to complete their terms in April, which means Nitish Kumar may continue as Chief Minister for a short period before formally transitioning to Parliament.

JD(U) Leaders Try to Persuade Nitish Kumar
While the speculation continues, reports suggest that leaders within Nitish Kumar’s own party are attempting to persuade him to remain in the Chief Minister’s post.
Late on Wednesday night, several senior JD(U) leaders and members of Nitish Kumar’s family gathered at his official residence in Patna. The meeting reportedly focused on convincing him not to leave the position of Chief Minister at this stage.
JD(U) minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary acknowledged that discussions had taken place regarding Nitish Kumar’s possible move to the Rajya Sabha. However, he made it clear that the final decision rests solely with the Chief Minister.
He said, “There have been talks about Nitish Kumar going to the Rajya Sabha. But the final call has to be taken by him only… Nishant is joining politics soon, as per the wish of the party rank and file.”
This statement also confirmed that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, may soon enter active politics, a development that could influence future political equations within the party.
At the same time, political activity in Patna has intensified. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit the city on Thursday, 5th March. During his visit, he will take part in the nomination process of BJP leader Nitin Nabin, who has been selected as the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Bihar.

Health Issues Reportedly Behind the Decision
Sources within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have indicated that Nitish Kumar’s health may be a major factor influencing his decision to move to the Rajya Sabha.
According to individuals familiar with the situation, the Chief Minister has reportedly been dealing with several health-related concerns in recent months. These issues are believed to have affected his ability to actively manage the state’s day-to-day administrative responsibilities.
A source from within the alliance stated, “The CM has been facing serious health issues,” while also suggesting that many people now feel the state administration is largely being managed by bureaucrats rather than by active political leadership.
Although no official confirmation has been issued by either BJP or JD(U), insiders claim that Nitish Kumar has already taken a key step toward entering Parliament.
Sources say that he has already “signed the papers” required for his Rajya Sabha nomination, indicating that the decision may already be in motion behind the scenes.

NDA’s Strong Victory in the Last Bihar Election
The potential leadership change comes at a time when the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is enjoying strong political momentum in Bihar.
In the Bihar Assembly elections held last November, the NDA secured a commanding victory. Out of the 243 seats in the state assembly, the alliance won a total of 202 seats, giving it a comfortable majority.
Within the alliance, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 89 seats. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) performed strongly as well, securing 85 seats.
For JD(U), this result represented a major improvement compared to the previous election cycle. The party increased its seat tally by 42 seats, a gain that many party leaders attributed to Nitish Kumar’s leadership and long political experience.
Despite growing speculation about the Chief Minister’s future, attempts to obtain an official reaction from JD(U)’s national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha were unsuccessful, as he could not be reached for comment.

Possible Candidates for the Next Chief Minister
If Nitish Kumar eventually steps down from the Chief Minister’s position, discussions have already begun about who could succeed him.
According to sources within the alliance, several names are being considered for the top post.
Among the leading contenders are Bihar’s current Deputy Chief Ministers, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha. Both leaders are seen as influential figures within the BJP and have played active roles in the state government.
Other names that have surfaced include Industry Minister Dilip Jaiswal and BJP MLA Sanjeev Chourasia. Their names are being discussed in political circles as possible candidates who could take on the leadership responsibility.
At the same time, there are indications that JD(U) may still retain some influence in the new political arrangement. One proposal being discussed is that the party could secure two Deputy Chief Minister positions in the next government.
Under such a scenario, JD(U) leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar could be given those roles. Additionally, Union Minister Nityanand Rai is also being mentioned as a potential contender for the Chief Minister’s position.
For many political observers, the timing of these developments has come as a surprise. If Nitish Kumar does step down, it would happen only about three months after the NDA returned to power with a strong mandate in the state.
One NDA leader explained how earlier discussions had focused on a different plan involving Nitish Kumar’s son.
He said, “Earlier, it was being decided that Nishant Kumar would be sent to the Rajya Sabha. However, Nishant Kumar wanted to enter politics directly from Bihar.”
The leader further added, “There had been initial discussions on sending (Nitish’s son) Nishant Kumar to the Rajya Sabha. However, Nishant reportedly showed his keenness towards starting his political innings in Bihar. While these discussions were on, the BJP central leadership reportedly advised Nitish Kumar to go to the Rajya Sabha and nominate a successor of his choice. Nitish agreed to it, even though several party leaders did not approve.”
These ongoing political discussions suggest that Bihar may soon witness a significant leadership transition, one that could reshape the political landscape of the state in the coming weeks.
