Amid the ongoing standoff in Parliament concerning allegations of excessive police force against student demonstrators, Union Home Minister Amit Shah issued a direct challenge to the Opposition on Wednesday. He offered to sit through a prolonged parliamentary debate and address every query brought forward by Members of Parliament.

Shah announced his readiness to stay in Parliament from 3 pm on Wednesday until 3 pm the following day. During this period, he intended to hear all the concerns raised by the Opposition and respond to them point-by-point. This challenge came as opposition parties maintained their demand for the Home Minister to personally address the police action that occurred during a July 20 student march regarding the NEET paper leak issue.

The Home Minister also pushed back against repeated Opposition claims that he had been “missing” from Parliament.

“Terms like ‘laapata’ and ‘bhaag gaye’ are increasingly being heard in India’s public and parliamentary life,” Shah stated. He clarified that he had been attending Parliament regularly, but constant disruptions had prevented meaningful proceedings from taking place.

Shah emphasized that the government had already agreed to the Opposition’s demand for an in-depth discussion, arguing that there was no valid reason for the deadlock to persist.

He noted that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had previously made it clear that the government was ready for a comprehensive debate on the student protests. According to the Home Minister, the Opposition had originally requested a discussion, but was now preventing it from taking place.

Setting clear terms, Shah put the ball firmly in the Opposition’s court. He asked opposition parties to submit a formal letter to the Speaker by 2 pm, which would allow the discussion to start at 3 pm. He reaffirmed his commitment to stay in the House until 3 pm the next day to listen to the entire debate and answer every issue raised.

“I will sit in the House; I will listen to everyone and respond to every point. The government has nothing to hide,” Shah stated.

He further offered to let the debate run late into the night and suggested that Question Hour could be suspended if the Speaker approved, highlighting his position that the government was fully prepared for an exhaustive debate.

Shah argued that the Opposition’s insistence on a standalone statement from him was not the correct mechanism to handle such a grave matter.

“There are established rules and procedures for parliamentary discussions,” he said, emphasizing that serious allegations must be addressed through a detailed debate rather than a one-sided statement.

The Home Minister added that the debate could cover both the allegations against the administration and the reasons why the Opposition had repeatedly blocked the matter from being discussed in the House.

“The NDA government under Modi ji’s leadership is ready to discuss anything; they just need to let Parliament function,” Shah said.

Rahul Gandhi Rejects Shah’s Proposal

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi turned down Shah’s offer, maintaining that the Opposition demanded direct accountability regarding the police action rather than what he categorized as a lecture from the Home Minister.

Rahul questioned who authorized the alleged force against the protesting students and asked directly whether Shah had sanctioned the actions.

“Did Home Minister Shah give orders to shoot our children or not? If he did, he is culpable and if he did not, he is incompetent,” Rahul said.

He went on to claim that Shah had avoided appearing in the House for nearly three weeks and accused him of lacking the courage to face the Opposition.

Rahul later expanded his critique on X (formerly Twitter), writing that when a person lacks the courage to speak the truth, “silence speaks for him”, adding that Shah’s silence was equivalent to a confession.

The Congress leader’s response served as a direct rejection of Shah’s suggested debate framework, ensuring that the stalemate between the government and the Opposition remains active. However, this refusal highlights a growing pattern where the Opposition retreats after launching sharp attacks at the Centre. Whether concerning allegations of "vote chori" or the recent student protests, the Opposition—particularly the Congress party—appears to focus on gaining political leverage rather than working toward a permanent solution.

Opposition Escalates Protests

The INDIA bloc has maintained its demand for Shah’s presence in Parliament and an official statement regarding the alleged police excesses. This conflict has expanded beyond the topic of student demonstrations.

Earlier on Wednesday, opposition MPs—including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra—staged a protest within the Parliament House Complex. Their demonstration targeted both the alleged police action against students and allegations regarding donations related to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Priyanka Gandhi also pressed the government for answers regarding allegations of lathi-charges, the use of pellet guns, and the heavy deployment of security forces against the protesters.

While the Opposition argues that these events necessitate direct accountability from the Union Home Minister, the government maintains that it is prepared for a detailed discussion as long as parliamentary order is restored.

Government Challenges Opposition to Debate

This ongoing confrontation follows statements made on Monday by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who confirmed that the government was ready for a “full and detailed discussion” on the student movement and related developments.

However, Rijiju appealed to opposition MPs to refrain from disrupting the proceedings while Shah was addressing the House.

The government has framed the standoff as a choice between structured debate and parliamentary disruption: it maintains that it is ready to answer questions, provided the Opposition allows Parliament to function.

Shah’s challenge raises the stakes in this legislative standoff. By offering to remain in the House for 24 continuous hours to address every question on the record, the Home Minister has challenged Congress and the INDIA bloc to conduct this debate on the floor of Parliament instead of relying on outdoor protests and demands for a standalone statement.

For now, the Opposition refuses to accept these conditions, continuing to demand that Shah first answer the allegations directly.

This situation leaves a clear political question: Does the Opposition genuinely seek an extended, point-by-point debate with the Home Minister on the record, or does it prefer to press for a statement on its own terms? Shah’s offer has shifted the political pressure back onto the Opposition. If the Congress party has genuine, unanswered questions, it has been given the platform to present them directly to the Home Minister in Parliament. Refusing this opportunity allows the government to argue that the Opposition is prioritized over constructive debate.
