Rahul Gandhi claimed the late Arun Jaitley warned him on farm laws—a full year after Jaitley’s death; as Rohan Jaitley hit back, Rahul doubled down with wild accusations of election rigging, forgetting Modi won with full majority—twice

While making up a story, which he often does, Rahul Gandhi forgot a crucial detail, Arun Jaitley was not alive when the farm laws were introduced.

Rahul Gandhi’s False Farm Law Claim Raises Eyebrows: Talks About a Threat From Arun Jaitley, a Year After His Demise

In a fresh controversy, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has found himself at the center of criticism after making a provably false claim involving the late BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley. While attacking the electoral system of India and the contentious farm laws during the Congress Party’s Annual Legal Conclave in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi narrated an incident that has left many baffled.

At the conclave, Rahul Gandhi said, “I remember when I was fighting the farm laws, Arun Jaitley ji was sent to me to threaten me. He told me ‘if you carry on opposing the govt, fighting the farm laws, we will have to act against you’. I looked at him and said ‘I don’t think you have an idea who you are talking to.’”

This dramatic statement, however, falls apart under the weight of factual timelines. Arun Jaitley, former Union Finance Minister and one of the key figures of the BJP, passed away on 24 August 2019 after battling prolonged illness. By that time, he had already distanced himself from active politics, formally opting out of Narendra Modi’s cabinet just before the Prime Minister's second term began. In his letter dated 29 May 2019, he had requested to be relieved from ministerial responsibilities due to his health.

Jaitley’s demise came a full year before the farm laws were even conceived. The controversial farm bills were approved by the Union Cabinet on 3 June 2020, and the ordinances were promulgated just two days later on 5 June 2020. These bills were presented in Parliament during September 2020, replacing the ordinances. Eventually, they were passed in both Houses that same month, which sparked widespread protests, particularly in Punjab and Haryana, starting December 2020.

Given this clearly documented timeline, Rahul Gandhi’s claim appears fabricated. It is impossible for Arun Jaitley to have met or threatened anyone regarding the farm laws, as he had already passed away more than a year before the laws even existed. This factual discrepancy raises serious questions about the credibility of Rahul Gandhi’s statement.

Rahul Gandhi didn’t stop there. He went on to attack the foundation of India’s democratic process, saying, “We are going to prove to you in the coming few days how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged and was rigged.” He further added, “The truth is that the election system in India is already dead. The Prime Minister of India is the Prime Minister of India with a very slim majority… If 15 seats were rigged, he would not have been the Prime Minister of India.”

These allegations stand in stark contrast to the actual electoral record. The Modi-led BJP won with a full majority in both 2014 and 2019, securing more than enough seats to form the government without coalition partners. On the other hand, the last three Congress-led governments—including under P.V. Narasimha Rao and Dr. Manmohan Singh—were formed as minority or coalition governments, without ever achieving the halfway mark on their own.

Such a misrepresentation of facts, especially regarding individuals who are no longer alive to respond, has stirred up disappointment and anger, not only among the BJP but also among neutral political observers.

Rohan Jaitley Sets the Record Straight: “My Father Passed Away Before Farm Laws Were Even Introduced”

Following Rahul Gandhi’s controversial statement, Rohan Jaitley, the son of Arun Jaitley, took to social media to challenge the misleading narrative and defend his late father’s dignity. In a pointed post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Rahul Gandhi now claims my late father, Arun Jaitley, threatened him over the farm laws. Let me remind him, my father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020.”

Rohan Jaitley didn’t just correct the timeline; he also underscored the values and principles his father stood for. Emphasizing the elder Jaitley’s character, he added, “More importantly, it was not in my father’s nature to threaten anyone over an opposing view. He was a staunch democrat and always believed in building consensus. If at all such a situation was to occur, as it often does in politics, he would invite free and open discussions to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to all. That was simply who he was and that remains his legacy today.”

In a sharp rebuke, Rohan reminded Rahul Gandhi to show respect while speaking of those who are no longer alive to defend themselves, referencing a similar incident in the past where Rahul allegedly politicised the final days of former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.

This incident has once again drawn attention to Rahul Gandhi’s recurring issues with factual accuracy, especially when it involves serious national matters or late political figures. As debates continue, the controversy has opened yet another chapter in the long saga of Rahul Gandhi’s contentious political rhetoric.
