West Bengal Elections: Protests Erupt in Falta Over Alleged Intimidation and Death Threats by Trinamool Congress

On Saturday, May 2, the Falta region in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district became a flashpoint of severe political tension. Local residents took to the streets in protest, raising serious allegations of intimidation and threats orchestrated by cadres of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). With the crucial counting of votes scheduled for May 4, the anxious citizens have strongly demanded a repoll in the Falta constituency to ensure a fair democratic process. Citing immediate threats to their lives and property, the locals have also urgently requested the deployment of additional security forces.

In response to the escalating situation, authorities have mobilized personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to restore order and maintain peace in the volatile area, as noted by national news agencies reporting from the ground.

The fear gripping the community is palpable, with residents naming specific individuals associated with the ruling party. According to the agitated locals, a TMC worker named Israfil Chowkidar has been at the forefront of the intimidation campaign, openly threatening arson and severe violence. Expressing the sheer terror of the situation, a local resident stated verbatim, “TMC’s Israfil Chowkidar has threatened us that if these people win, they will burn our houses and carry out bloodshed,” a local said. The situation appears remarkably complex, as the threats have allegedly targeted even those who supported the ruling party. A local woman expressed her dismay over being harassed despite her political allegiance, noting, “We had voted for TMC, yet they attacked us…We want him to be arrested. We need safety for women,” she said.

Falta Residents Accuse TMC Candidate Jahangir Khan of Issuing Severe Threats of Violence

The wave of intimidation was not confined to a single neighborhood; a strikingly similar crisis unfolded in the Hasimnagar area, located within the Falta community development block. Here, the local population shared distressing accounts of ongoing harassment at the hands of TMC workers. Highlighting the alleged subversion of local democratic structures, residents pointed out that their current gram panchayat head was never officially elected by the people, but rather handpicked and installed by the TMC. Adding to the gravity of the situation, the locals disclosed that Jahangir Khan, the official TMC candidate representing Falta, personally visited their community to deliver a chilling ultimatum. They claimed Khan explicitly warned that once the TMC secures power, the dissenting men would be murdered, and the local women would be subjected to sexual violence.

Detailing the harrowing sequence of events, a local woman provided a comprehensive account of the ongoing ordeal: “This has been happening since yesterday. TMC goons entered our village, harassed women and beat up people. The head of our gram panchayat is from TMC, and he was not voted to power; he was chosen by the party. Jahangir Khan came here and threatened us that if they come to power, they will rape our women and kill us. This is why people have been alert since yesterday. We organised a strike on Dum Dum Road, and it went on till last night. We were given time till 10 AM today. When no action was taken, we again came out to ask why that person had not been arrested till now. The police came and did a lathi charge, even on girls. People had to be hospitalised,” said a local woman.

It is particularly noteworthy that the Falta assembly segment falls under the broader Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. According to historical and political mapping, this region is widely recognized as a formidable political stronghold for Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress.

Election Observer and IPS Officer Ajay Pal Sharma Issues Strict Warning to Jahangir Khan

The escalating tensions in Falta had already caught the attention of election officials prior to Saturday's protests. Ajay Pal Sharma, an assertive Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer actively serving as a police observer in West Bengal, had previously confronted Jahangir Khan. Following multiple allegations that Khan's associates were intimidating voters, Sharma issued a stern warning to the TMC candidate, promising severe repercussions if the harassment continued. Furthermore, Sharma's keen observation skills led him to identify a significant irregularity regarding Khan's personal security detail, which far exceeded the limits of his designated security protocol.

During his assessment, Sharma discovered that an excessive contingent of 14 West Bengal police officers was stationed to guard Khan. When inquiring about this presence, the observer was informed that 10 of these officers had been specifically assigned to provide the candidate with Y-category protection. Promptly recognizing this glaring disparity in security allocation, Sharma issued a formal notification to the local Superintendent of Police, firmly demanding a comprehensive explanation for the unauthorized deployment of these additional state forces.

Election Commission Mandates Repolling Across 15 Selected Polling Stations

The deeply concerning reports of threats by TMC affiliates coincide with an ongoing repolling process authorized by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Following an official directive issued on Friday, fresh voting is currently being conducted at 15 specific polling booths spread across the Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies. Additionally, there is a strong possibility that approximately 30 booths within the Falta constituency itself may also undergo a repoll, although a final official decision on this matter is still eagerly awaited by the constituents and authorities.

The decision to conduct repolling was met with strong approval from the political opposition. Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent BJP MLA and the recognized leader of the opposition in the West Bengal state assembly, publicly welcomed the Election Commission's intervention. Adhikari had previously brought forward numerous narratives detailing widespread electoral malpractices across several booths, which he argued were deliberately orchestrated to heavily favor the TMC.

Concerns Raised Over Alleged EVM Tampering and Taped Voting Buttons in Falta

The demand for repolling in Falta is deeply rooted in previous controversies that surfaced during the electoral process. Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had raised serious alarms regarding suspected Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering during the crucial second phase of polling in specific booths within the Falta assembly constituency. In a bid to substantiate their claims, several BJP leaders, alongside Debangshu Panda, the BJP candidate for Falta, circulated video evidence online. These videos purportedly demonstrated that adhesive tape had been intentionally placed over the BJP candidate’s name and official party symbol on the EVMs across multiple polling stations. Consequently, the party vehemently demanded an immediate repoll in all the compromised locations to ensure electoral integrity.

Further compounding the allegations of electoral misconduct, the BJP also reported a severe security breach involving the unauthorized opening of a highly secure strong room. This serious accusation prompted swift administrative action, leading the Election Commission to suspend at least six officials pending a thorough investigation into the matter.
