From Purnia to Darbhanga, Hindu faith under attack as Islamists attempt unrest ahead of Bihar Vidhan Sabha election

As Bihar gears up for its Assembly elections, disturbing trends are surfacing that threaten to disrupt communal harmony. Certain groups are evidently working with the intention of dividing society along religious lines. Their strategy is clear: to create discord between Hindus and Muslims and use this unrest for vote-bank politics.

Two recent events—one in Purnia and another in Darbhanga—stand out as strong reminders of this disturbing attempt. The defacement of a Goddess Durga idol in Purnia and the dispute over the immersion of the idol of Baba Vishwakarma in Darbhanga have shown how fragile peace can become when religious sentiments are deliberately targeted. These incidents highlight how communal provocation is being used as a political tool in the run-up to elections.

Idol of Goddess Durga vandalized in Purnia

The destruction of a Goddess Durga idol at Majgama Haat in Purnia triggered widespread outrage across the community. The idols, being crafted for the upcoming Durga Puja—a holy and much-celebrated Hindu festival—were found damaged on the morning of Friday, 19th September. Locals, upon discovering the vandalization, were furious.

A Muslim youth was detained by the people for allegedly carrying out the act. In their anger, the crowd assaulted him, tied his hands with a rope, blocked the main road, and resorted to arson. Authorities rushed to control the situation, eventually rescuing the accused youth from the mob and securing him at a government facility.

The tension, however, did not end there. The crowd soon clashed with the police, creating a volatile environment. Tires were set ablaze, residents poured onto the streets, and the police struggled to restore order. This violent reaction raised a haunting question: Was this simply the act of one individual, or does it point to a larger conspiracy deliberately planned to spark unrest?

Dispute over idol immersion sparks anger in Darbhanga

Another controversy emerged in Kataharia village of Darbhanga district, under the jurisdiction of the Singhwara police station. This was the first time the village organized Baba Vishwakarma Puja, and a procession was planned for the idol immersion. However, objections were suddenly raised by certain individuals, who blocked the procession from passing through their village.

The situation turned tense as villagers insisted that the procession was following the approved route. Despite this, resistance continued. Authorities including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) arrived with heavy police deployment, but their presence failed to ease the tension.

Eventually, the administration was forced to divert the route. Instead of its original path, the idol was taken for immersion via the Gaighat police station area in Muzaffarpur district, a much longer route. This diversion angered locals deeply. One young villager expressed his frustration, saying, “We offer juice during their festivals but today the route of our sacred event was blocked.” The incident clearly wounded the religious feelings of the Hindu community in the area.

Motives behind these communal flashpoints

When we look closely at both the Purnia and Darbhanga incidents, it becomes evident that they are not isolated. Both occurred just before the Bihar Assembly elections and both directly targeted religious sensitivities. The timing suggests that these were deliberate provocations aimed at disturbing the pre-election environment.

With Durga Puja around the corner, followed by the elections, it appears that certain forces are attempting to polarize Hindu and Muslim communities. This is a well-known tactic in Bihar’s politics. Parties such as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) have often tried to consolidate Muslim votes by portraying the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata Dal United (JDU) alliance as antagonistic to minority interests.

Development narrative challenged by communal conspiracy

The timing of the Purnia incident gains more importance when seen against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the district. Recently, PM Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹40,000 crore in the state, including improvements in railway connectivity, airport projects, and other infrastructure upgrades. These steps were aimed at strengthening Bihar’s growth and improving law and order under the BJP-JDU government.

However, as these achievements started gaining public attention, disruptive elements attempted to shift the narrative. By creating religious unrest, they sought to weaken the focus on development. This is a classic diversionary tactic, as incidents like idol vandalism or blocked immersions easily stir public emotions, overshadowing discussions about progress and governance.

Political ploy to disturb harmony before the polls

Bihar is a state where Hindus and Muslims have long coexisted, celebrating each other’s festivals. The recent unrest raises a critical question: if people have always shared brotherhood, why are such incidents happening now? The answer lies in politics.

A young man from Darbhanga put it clearly when he said he participates in Muslim festivals, yet his festival route was obstructed. This sentiment resonates with many in Bihar, who see these events not as communal clashes but as political strategies to engineer division.

As elections approach, more such incidents can be expected. Especially during major festivals like Durga Puja, controversies around idol immersion are likely to be inflamed. The objective is straightforward: to polarize voters and consolidate Muslim votes for certain parties.

But the people of Bihar are aware. They know their true needs are development, employment, and peace, not division. The strength of Bihar has always been its harmony, and preserving it is crucial. The people must recognize these political gameplans for what they are—conspiracies to disrupt peace and manipulate democracy.
