Dharmasthala, a sacred Hindu temple, was dragged into a storm of AI lies, false burial claims, and political meddling, but the plot collapsed when confessions revealed it was never about justice, only a conspiracy to defame faith and break Hindu unity

The controversy’s beginning was tied to an AI-generated propaganda video by a YouTuber named Sameer Mohammed, who released shocking falsehoods claiming that “1,000 girls raped and buried” in Dharmasthala.

Dharmasthala Conspiracy: A Sacred Temple Under Siege of False Narratives

Dharmasthala, one of the most respected Hindu pilgrimage sites in Karnataka, is not just a Mandir but an institution that feeds lakhs of devotees every single day and symbolizes the cultural and spiritual strength of crores of Kannadigas. Yet, in recent months, this sacred site became the center of a well-planned assault launched by a nexus of Leftist activists, Congress elements, radical groups, and even international anti-Hindu lobbies. What seemed at first like a movement for justice soon unfolded as a deliberate conspiracy designed to weaken a centuries-old spiritual pillar.

The controversy around Dharmasthala did not rise naturally. It was not the outcome of an organic grievance by devotees or locals. Instead, it was a carefully choreographed attempt to manufacture outrage against one of Karnataka’s most revered Hindu temples. What initially appeared like a shocking revelation began to look like a staged drama—scripted to gain traction in Leftist echo chambers and in sections of Western media that are always eager to demonize Hindu institutions. Far from being a grassroots agitation, it was a calculated spectacle aimed at producing noise, confusion, and distrust.

At its very core, the entire episode was not about facts but about narrative warfare. By targeting Dharmasthala, conspirators attempted to strike directly at a cultural and spiritual symbol that has for centuries commanded respect across communities. The plan was simple yet dangerous: float sensational claims, flood social media and news outlets with half-truths, and drag the temple into the court of public opinion before truth could even catch up. In doing so, the masterminds of this smear campaign hoped not only to defame an institution but also to weaken the larger Hindu identity it represents.

The controversy’s beginning was tied to an AI-generated propaganda video by a YouTuber named Sameer Mohammed, who released shocking falsehoods claiming that “1,000 girls raped and buried” in Dharmasthala. This grotesque claim, designed only to shock and mislead, immediately spread across digital platforms. Soon after, a masked man calling himself Bhima appeared, dramatically alleging that he had personally buried “100 women.” But when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) carried out extensive excavations at 17 different sites, they discovered nothing but a few old male bones from legally recorded burials.

Despite the lack of evidence, political lobbies and radical outfits like the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) jumped on the bandwagon. Left-leaning activists and Congress politicians amplified the story, while international platforms such as BBC and Al Jazeera, along with regional portals like The News Minute, gave wide coverage without verifying facts. The goal was never truth; the aim was propaganda—to weaponize lies against a Mandir that feeds lakhs daily and represents the cultural pride of crores of Hindus.

By mid-August, the entire conspiracy collapsed. Bhima himself confessed before the SIT that his claims were orchestrated and that in 2023, he was pressured by a group to file false complaints. His admission laid bare the real plot: to tarnish Dharmasthala’s sacred image, defame Veerendra Heggade, and shake the confidence of Hindus in one of their strongest spiritual bastions.

The whole operation—ranging from AI fakery to planted testimonies, political meddling, and global media narratives—was nothing less than a synchronised attack on Hindu society. Though Dharmasthala emerged from this storm with its sanctity intact, the episode stands as a stark reminder of how far vested interests will go to malign Hindu temples and destabilize faith-based institutions.

Sequence of Events

1. The AI-Generated Propaganda Video

The first spark was lit when YouTuber Sameer Mohammed released an AI-generated video after nearly 13 years of the unresolved Sowjanya murder case. This video fabricated shocking details and falsely connected Dharmasthala to multiple rapes and murders. It went to the extreme of declaring that “1000 girls were raped and buried in Dharmasthala.”

According to India Today, this artificial intelligence-generated video was filled with fabricated claims and baseless allegations. Instead of presenting verified facts, Sameer spread falsehoods that projected Dharmasthala as a hub of “mass burials” and heinous crimes. His propaganda was not only misleading but also dangerous, as it triggered unrest and directly defamed a centuries-old Hindu religious institution.

Sameer’s double standards became obvious when his past online activities were examined. Although he once proudly uploaded videos showcasing his spiritual trip to Ajmer Dargah, he never addressed the Ajmer rape scandal, one of the most horrifying cases in Indian history. His silence on those crimes, while aggressively targeting a Hindu temple using fabricated AI videos, exposes the selective outrage and hypocrisy driving his activism.

Mainstream media, without cross-checking facts, irresponsibly echoed this AI-generated propaganda. The so-called “Dharmasthala mass burial case” narrative stemmed entirely from Sameer’s manipulated video. By injecting false details into public discourse, he weaponized technology to mislead the public against a Mandir that has for centuries been a center of service and faith.

As the controversy deepened, reports suggested that Sameer went into hiding, raising serious concerns about his external backers and possible funding networks. Police efforts to track him intensified as suspicions of international links began to surface.

2. The ‘Bhima’ Testimony and False Burial Claims

The second major element of the campaign was the so-called testimony of a man named Bhima. His background was already suspicious, with reports alleging he was a converted Christian with no genuine association with Dharmasthala’s administration. Yet, he suddenly emerged with dramatic allegations that he had buried “over 100 women” in Dharmasthala. This sensational claim was instantly weaponized by anti-Hindu groups and hungry media outlets eager for headlines.

Bhima’s account sounded like a script from a fictional horror story. He claimed that temple authorities had forced him to dig graves and dispose of women’s bodies, many of whom he insinuated were sexually assaulted. These accusations, dripping with malice and designed to shock, were circulated in public without a shred of evidence. His intention was clear: to demonize Dharmasthala, to generate outrage, and to fuel distrust toward Hindu religious institutions.

However, when the SIT carried out a full investigation, his lies collapsed completely. Excavations at every site Bhima pointed to revealed nothing. No graves, no skeletons, no trace of the horror he described. Instead, the SIT only recovered a few old skeletal remains confirmed as accidental deaths and legally recorded burials—none of them linked to the fabricated “mass burial” story.

Even Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, not known for shielding Hindu institutions lightly, admitted publicly that a “conspiracy mafia” was behind Bhima’s allegations. This acknowledgment made it clear that the burial story was not the testimony of a victim but a planted script, designed by vested interests to malign a temple that has for centuries symbolized service, charity, and Hindu faith.

3. Political Pressure Behind SIT Formation

The very foundation of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was set up to probe the Dharmasthala controversy did not come from concrete evidence but from political pressure. In fact, Congress minister Dinesh Gundu Rao admitted openly that the SIT was formed not because of any proof but solely due to unrelenting pressure from Leftist groups. This was a startling confession that revealed how political compulsions, rather than genuine pursuit of truth, dictated the course of the investigation.

Behind the scenes, activists like Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi and Girish Mattannanavar were instrumental in fueling this campaign. They cloaked their activities under the emotional banner of seeking “justice for Sowjanya,” a tragic case that continues to pain the state. But instead of allowing due judicial processes to proceed, they deliberately linked the case with Dharmasthala, planting suspicion and hostility against the temple and its administrator, Dharmadhikari Dr. Veerendra Heggade.

Their strategy was straightforward yet manipulative—keep Sowjanya’s name alive in public debates, repeatedly link the case to Dharmasthala without presenting proof, and demand investigation after investigation until an SIT was eventually constituted. This relentless activism succeeded in bending the political establishment. The fact that the SIT was born out of public agitation and lobbying, and not out of fresh forensic findings or factual revelations, underlined the larger agenda driving the storm.

It became increasingly clear that the SIT was never intended to find truth. Its creation was meant to satisfy those determined to tarnish the image of a sacred Hindu institution. In the process, the memory of Sowjanya, the victim whose name was being paraded, was reduced to a political weapon. This misuse of her tragedy not only insulted Dharmasthala’s sanctity but also disrespected her memory. Opportunists like Thimarodi and Mattannanavar, guided by anti-Hindu elements, tried to destabilize a centuries-old faith center by hiding behind the banner of justice.

4. SIT Digging Operations: High Hopes, No Results

Once the SIT came into existence under political pressure, enormous resources were allocated for excavation drives in and around Dharmasthala. Teams were equipped with advanced technologies, including ground-penetrating radars, heavy earthmovers, and even specialized forensic support. The very sites pointed out by Bhima—the man who had claimed to bury “over 100 women”—became the focus of this massive operation.

The state government spent significant amounts of taxpayer money to deploy these operations, all in the hope of uncovering “mass graves” that had been painted as the ultimate proof of the conspiracy. For days, multiple teams combed through every location, digging and scanning, often under the full glare of media attention.

Yet, when the dust settled, the results were nothing short of humiliating for those who had fanned the allegations. No mass burials were discovered. Not a single shred of evidence pointed to the crimes that were so loudly alleged. Instead, the SIT unearthed only a handful of skeletal remains. These were later confirmed to be linked to accidental deaths and legally recorded burials, while a few bones were still pending forensic confirmation.

The extensive operations exposed the scale of the waste—time, money, manpower, and public attention were all spent chasing a phantom narrative. What was projected as a “mass burial” horror story collapsed into nothing but baseless propaganda designed to malign Dharmasthala’s name.

5. International Media’s Role in Amplifying the Conspiracy

When the controversy was at its peak, global media outlets jumped in like vultures circling a carcass. The moment fabricated claims and AI-generated lies were thrown into circulation, BBC and Al Jazeera picked them up with sensational headlines. They ignored the absence of evidence, disregarded the SIT’s findings, and focused only on portraying Dharmasthala as a site of mass crimes.

This opportunistic media frenzy reflected a global pattern. Time and again, international media platforms that hesitate to report or deliberately downplay issues of Islamist extremism become hyperactive when it comes to targeting Hindu institutions. For these outlets, a baseless conspiracy in Dharmasthala was enough to mount an international defamation campaign, while real atrocities elsewhere were quietly brushed aside.

Their coverage revealed more than just negligence—it showed an ideological bias. By behaving like scavengers feeding off Hindu society’s dignity, BBC, Al Jazeera, and their ideological allies exposed themselves as less interested in reporting truth and more concerned with amplifying anti-Hindu narratives on the global stage.

6. Activists’ Real Motives Exposed

If any doubts remained about the intent behind the Dharmasthala conspiracy, they were shattered by revelations from a sting operation. In recorded evidence, so-called activists openly admitted that their mission was never about seeking justice for Sowjanya. Their true objective was to malign Veerendra Heggade and damage the reputation of Dharmasthala.

The sting operation exposed the duplicity of individuals like Girish Mattannanavar and Mahesh Shetty Thimmarodi. Instead of showing compassion for the victim, they revealed their ideological agenda to undermine the credibility of a spiritual institution. Their public rhetoric was filled with deliberate misdirection and provocation, meant only to stir controversy.

One particularly disturbing incident caught on camera showed Mahesh Shetty Thimmarodi verbally abusing a female journalist, scolding her with language unfit for public discourse. This shocking behavior revealed his deep-seated bias and complete lack of respect for women. A man who cannot treat a woman journalist with dignity holds no moral ground to claim that he is fighting for justice on behalf of a murdered young girl.

This hypocrisy makes it clear: “justice for Sowjanya” was never the real aim. It was a campaign designed to weaponize her name, target Veerendra Heggade, and weaken the credibility of Dharmasthala. Far from being a movement for justice, it was a propaganda-driven attempt to fracture Hindu faith in one of its most respected institutions..

7. Radical Groups Escalate the Conspiracy

The controversy surrounding Dharmasthala did not remain confined to social media propaganda or courtroom theatrics. Soon, it was hijacked by radical outfits such as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), a group with a documented history of Islamist leanings and street-level agitations. Seizing the opportunity to inflame tensions, SDPI organized aggressive protests, shouted provocative slogans, and demanded fresh probes into the fabricated mass burial narrative.

Their intention was never to deliver justice. The purpose was far more calculated—to keep the conspiracy alive in the public imagination, ignite communal unrest, and project Dharmasthala as guilty in the eyes of the people despite the glaring absence of evidence.

By injecting themselves into the matter, SDPI made it clear that the attack on Dharmasthala had gone far beyond political or media-driven propaganda. What began as AI-generated lies and false testimonies had now transformed into street-level mobilization led by radical groups with a known record of targeting Hindu institutions.

8. Leftist Politicians and CPI’s Unwarranted Interference

As if the situation was not volatile enough, political interference from Leftist leaders soon added more fuel to the fire. The Communist Party of India (CPI), despite having no jurisdiction in Karnataka’s internal matters, involved itself in the case. Kerala CPI MPs, including Sandosh Kumar P, wrote letters and attempted to escalate the controversy at the national level, demanding more probes into the baseless allegations surrounding Dharmasthala.

This sudden activism raised obvious questions. Why would Kerala’s communist leadership, with no direct stake in Karnataka’s affairs, interfere in an issue that was already under state investigation? The answer pointed toward a clear ideological motive: to politicize the matter and tarnish a Hindu religious institution under the pretext of seeking justice.

This interference laid bare the ideological undercurrent that had been running from the beginning. The CPI and its Leftist allies have a long record of hostility toward Hindu traditions, temples, and faith-based organizations. Their intervention in the Dharmasthala case was not about Sowjanya or the people of Karnataka. It was a political maneuver to exploit a tragedy, manipulate public opinion, and advance their anti-Hindu agenda.

9. Mainstream Media’s Biased Onslaught

If there was one factor that amplified the conspiracy more than anything else, it was the role of mainstream and digital media. The bias became clear when one compared the disproportionate coverage of Dharmasthala to other far more serious crimes across the country.

Digital portals such as The News Minute alone published over two dozen stories on Dharmasthala in 2025. Yet, the same outlet almost entirely ignored the Guindy rape case in Tamil Nadu, which had direct links to the ruling DMK party. The selective outrage made one thing clear: this was not journalism but agenda-driven reporting, designed to serve certain ideological and political interests.

By exaggerating or outright fabricating stories around Dharmasthala—a temple respected by crores of devotees—the media was actively creating doubt and mistrust about Hindu institutions. At the same time, real crimes and governance failures in other states were conveniently swept under the carpet.

This bias had a broader purpose. The Dakshina Kannada region has long been a bastion of Hindu faith, culture, and traditions. By painting Dharmasthala as controversial, media groups were attempting to erode the confidence of Hindus in their institutions. The result was not accountability or justice, but manufactured anxiety and division. Selective outrage was weaponized to weaken communities that remain deeply rooted in Sanatan traditions.

10. The Collapse of the Conspiracy

Eventually, the elaborate narrative collapsed under the weight of its own lies. As reported by OpIndia, the so-called Dharmasthala mass burial case was exposed as nothing but a grand hoax. Despite the use of excavators, forensic teams, and even advanced ground-penetrating radar across 17 identified sites, the SIT found no evidence of mass burials.

The skeletal fragments recovered were conclusively proven to belong to men who had died decades earlier, with their deaths already recorded legally. Even the dramatic skull produced in court by the masked man, Bhima, was identified as belonging to a man who had died thirty years ago. What was projected as proof turned out to be yet another planted prop in a malicious script.

Adding to the disgrace, Bhima—the so-called whistleblower—confessed before the SIT that he had fabricated his testimony under external pressure. His admission raised burning questions: Who instructed him to invent the story of “1000 murdered women” when no evidence supported it? Who funded and orchestrated this elaborate drama?

The fallout was severe. The government had already poured crores of rupees, countless hours of police manpower, and high-end forensic resources into chasing shadows. What they ultimately uncovered was nothing but lies designed to malign one of Hindu Dharma’s most revered shrines.

It became clear that this entire conspiracy had little to do with Sowjanya or the pursuit of justice. It was always about targeting Dharmasthala, smearing Hindu institutions, and destabilizing Dakshina Kannada—a stronghold of Hindu faith.

Now the responsibility lies with the SIT to shift its focus. The real culprits are not just Bhima or Sameer Mohammed but the hidden handlers, politicians, and vested interests who weaponized their voices. Unless these masterminds are exposed and brought to justice, the stain of this manufactured scandal will remain, unfairly burdening the devotees of Dharmasthala.
