Uttar Pradesh: Shamli man Farooq murders wife Tahira and two daughters over Burqa dispute, hides bodies in septic tank

A shocking crime has come to light from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, where a man named Farooq brutally killed his wife and two young daughters and secretly buried their bodies inside a septic tank in the courtyard of his home. The incident took place in Garhi Daulat village, which comes under the Kandhla police station area, and the murders occurred on 8th December.

According to the police, Farooq murdered his wife Tahira and their two minor daughters, Afreen and Sahreen, after growing angry over what he claimed was their refusal to follow his instructions. The case came to the attention of authorities after the woman and her daughters were reported missing for several days, raising concern among family members and villagers.

Farooq was taken into police custody for questioning once the missing complaint was formally lodged. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime. Police officials stated that Farooq admitted to shooting his wife Tahira and their elder daughter Afreen, while the younger daughter Sahreen was strangled to death. At the time the police began their investigation, Tahira and the two girls had been missing for almost ten days.

The matter was first reported by Farooq’s father, who contacted the police on Tuesday after Tahira and the two daughters, Afreen aged 14 and Sahreen aged 7, had been missing for nearly six days. His concern deepened after he questioned Farooq about their whereabouts.

“When Farooq’s father questioned him about their whereabouts, he claimed that they were staying in a rented house in Shamli. His father approached the police and expressed suspicion that his son had killed them,” a police officer said. The officer also mentioned that Farooq had strained relations with his parents and was not on speaking terms with them.

Growing increasingly uneasy, Farooq’s father decided to alert the police, fearing that something serious had happened. When questioned by the police, Farooq initially tried to mislead the investigators by giving false information. However, after sustained and intense interrogation, he eventually broke down and confessed to killing his wife and daughters. He also revealed the exact location where the bodies had been hidden.

During questioning, Farooq told the police that he was deeply annoyed with his wife and daughters for not listening to him. He claimed they often stepped outside the house without wearing a burqa, despite his repeated instructions to stay indoors and cover themselves properly when going out. According to his statement, this anger and resentment gradually built up and led him to plan their murder.

To carry out the crime, Farooq allegedly purchased an illegal country-made pistol along with cartridges from Kairana. Police also revealed that he had earlier arranged for a pit to be dug in the courtyard of his house. At the time, he told others that the pit was meant for constructing a toilet, which helped him avoid suspicion.

Investigators said that Tahira had been staying at her paternal home before the incident. Farooq reportedly called her back to his house. On the night of 8th December, he woke her up under the pretext of making tea for him. When she complied, he shot her. The sound of the gunshot woke up their two daughters. Farooq then shot the elder daughter Afreen, while the younger daughter Sahreen was strangled after witnessing the horrifying scene. After killing all three, he buried their bodies inside the septic tank in the courtyard of the house.

On Tuesday evening, 16th December, acting on Farooq’s confession, the police dug up the septic tank and recovered the bodies of Tahira and her two daughters. Senior Superintendent of Police Shamli, N P Singh, confirmed that information about the missing woman and children had initially been received through the village head. He stated that during the course of the investigation, Farooq confessed to the murders. The accused has since been arrested, and legal proceedings are currently underway.

During interrogation, Farooq also revealed details about his background, stating that he had studied up to Class 5 in a madrasa before dropping out. Meanwhile, Tahira’s father spoke about the long-standing troubles his daughter had faced in her marriage. He said Farooq had been harassing Tahira for a long time, and village panchayats were held more than ten times in Garhi Daulat village as well as at their parental home to resolve the disputes. Each time, however, Tahira was sent back to her husband due to social pressure.

Superintendent of Police N P Singh further clarified that the murders took place on the night of December 9-10. He explained that Farooq allegedly woke his wife on the excuse of making tea and then shot her and the elder daughter. The younger daughter was strangled after she witnessed the killings. Police believe the crime was planned in advance, as Farooq had dug a deep pit beforehand, buried the bodies, and covered the area with bricks to conceal it.

The recovered bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Farooq allegedly told investigators that financial stress, frequent arguments, and feelings of anger and humiliation pushed him to commit the crime. Police officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing and more details may emerge as the case progresses.
