Love Jihad in Gwalior: Married Sabir Khan Blackmailed a Hindu Girl, Abducted and Held Hostage for 3 Years, Rapes and Forced Fed Beef, Pressurised to Convert to Islam

In a disturbing instance of yet another "Love Jihad," a case has surfaced from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. A married man, identified as Sabir Khan, has been accused of exploiting a young Hindu woman by forging a deceitful friendship with her after his marriage. The allegations against him are severe and multifaceted, touching on various aspects of coercion and abuse.

Sabir Khan, also known as Chhote Khan, resided close to the victim's home. The 27-year-old woman, hailing from Taraganj, Gwalior, has brought forward a complaint against him, which she registered at the Bahodapur police station last Friday, April 26, 2024. The victim's ordeal reportedly lasted more than three years, during which she was manipulated and forcibly confined.

According to the details shared by the victim, Sabir Khan employed blackmail as a means to prevent her from leaving. She claims that whenever she attempted to escape, he threatened to implicate her family members in a criminal case by penning a fraudulent suicide note that would falsely incriminate her brother and father. The psychological torment was compounded by physical and sexual abuse, where she was subjected to repeated assaults and "unnatural acts."

One of the most harrowing accusations involves forced consumption of beef, a significant violation of her religious beliefs, paired with relentless pressure to abandon her faith and convert to Islam. This aspect of the allegations particularly highlights the coercive nature of the religious conversion she was subjected to.

The young woman's father, who earns his livelihood through a tent-related business, and other family members are likely devastated by the events that have unfolded. The community and local authorities are currently dealing with the implications of this case, as it touches on sensitive issues of religious and personal autonomy.

This case has once again sparked a discussion on the "Love Jihad" cases, a pattern in which Muslim men target women belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam by feigning love.

The troubling saga involving Sabir Khan began in October 2021, when he first made contact with the victim. Initially, their relationship was framed as a friendship; they began communicating regularly, during a time when Khan was still unmarried. However, the dynamics between them drastically changed following his marriage.

The victim, respecting the sanctity of marriage, chose to end the friendship once Sabir Khan was married. Despite this, Khan did not respect her decision and persistently continued to approach her, transitioning from a friend to a harasser. His actions began to reflect a disturbing pattern of coercion and intimidation.

According to the victim’s account, Sabir Khan employed particularly manipulative tactics to ensure her compliance. She recalled a chilling threat where he declared that he would take his own life and ensure her father and brother were blamed for his death by mentioning their names in a suicide note. This threat left her in a state of fear and compelled her to resume communication with him.

The escalation of Khan’s threats became more pronounced over time. He arranged a meeting with the victim, during which he demanded that she accompany him. When she rightfully refused, fearing for her safety, Sabir Khan's response was to threaten her life. This explicit threat to her safety is a critical point, showcasing his willingness to use extreme measures to control and dominate her actions.

This account adds a deeper layer to the already severe allegations against Sabir Khan, illustrating his disregard for the victim’s autonomy and well-being. His actions, as described by the victim, paint a picture of a man who uses fear and manipulation as tools to subjugate and control, raising serious concerns about his conduct and the threat he poses not just to the victim, but to society at large.

The grievous situation surrounding Sabir Khan and the victim further escalated as detailed in her complaint. She described a particularly distressing episode where Khan forcibly took her to a secluded area known as Ramaji culvert (Puliya) in Bahodapur. It was here that she first faced sexual harassment at his hands, marking the beginning of an extended period of captivity and abuse.

According to the victim, following this initial assault, Sabir Khan confined her within his house, using the threat of suicide as a means to prevent her from returning to her own home. This manipulation tactic was not an isolated threat but part of a continuous strategy to control her. During her confinement, she faced relentless pressure from Khan to convert to Islam. Whenever she resisted or refused his demands, he responded with physical violence, which not only inflicted physical pain but also immense psychological distress.

The abuse reportedly included not just threats and assaults but also severe neglect, as Khan would deprive her of food, compounding her suffering. This neglect paints a grim picture of the living conditions she was forced to endure under his control.

Adding to the gravity of her accusations, the victim recounted multiple instances where Sabir Khan engaged in what she described as "unnatural acts," further violating her dignity and autonomy. His insistence on her conversion to Islam was articulated through stark ultimatums, such as, "If you are living with me, you will have to become a Muslim." This not only underscores his coercive tactics but also his blatant disregard for her personal beliefs and rights.

Complicating the abuse, she also stated that Khan's immediate family, including his father, Yusuf Khan, and brother, Sameer Khan, participated in the physical abuse, indicating that the maltreatment was both supported and perpetuated by his family members. This involvement of multiple family members in the abuse highlights a deeply troubling environment, where her safety and well-being were compromised at multiple levels.

The victim's experiences, as outlined in her complaint, provide a harrowing look into the extent of control and abuse she was subjected to by Sabir Khan and his family, shedding light on a severe case of human rights violations and the urgent need for protective intervention.

Escalation and Intervention: Sabir Khan's Continued Abuse and the Victim's Escape

The distressing narrative of abuse surrounding Sabir Khan reached a critical point on April 25th, when another horrifying incident occurred. On this day, Sabir's father, Yusuf Khan, and his brother, Sameer Khan, forcefully entered the house where the victim was held. In an alarming escalation, not only did they assault her, but Sabir’s wife and mother also joined in, attacking her and even attempting to end her life. It was only the timely intervention of the landlord that saved her from this potentially fatal assault.

After the attackers left, the victim seized the opportunity to escape. She managed to run away and return to the safety of her own home. This escape allowed her to finally seek the help she desperately needed.

With the support of the Hindu Jagran Manch, an organization involved in advocating for the rights and protections of Hindus, the victim and her family were able to take a crucial step towards justice. They went to the Bahodapur police station, where they officially lodged a complaint against Sabir Khan, his father Yusuf Khan, and his brother Sameer Khan. The police took the allegations seriously and registered an FIR against the accused, charging Sabir Khan under several severe sections including rape, violation of the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act 2021, and assault. The legal implications of these charges are severe, reflecting the gravity of the offenses. At present, all the accused individuals are absconding, evading arrest and any immediate legal repercussions.

The victim’s attempt to seek help prior to this had been thwarted by an unfortunate circumstance at the police station. When she initially tried to report the abuse a day earlier, she had to leave without filing a complaint because there were no female staff members present, a factor that likely made her feel unsafe or unsupported in recounting her traumatic experiences.

This chain of events highlights not only the severe abuse and manipulation the victim suffered at the hands of Sabir Khan and his family but also the challenges victims face when seeking help from authorities.

In response to the serious allegations brought forth by the victim, Jitendra Singh Tomrakh, the in-charge at Bahodapur Police Station, has confirmed the severity of the situation. He stated that a case involving rape, forced religious conversion, hostage-taking, and assault of a young woman from Taraganj has indeed been registered. The police have initiated a comprehensive search for Sabir Khan and his accomplices, reflecting the law enforcement's commitment to addressing this grievous issue.

Amidst these legal proceedings, the Hindu Jagran Manch, a prominent advocacy group, has taken a firm stance on the matter. The organization’s workers have vocally demanded that the authorities ensure stringent action against the perpetrators. Their demands do not stop at a legal trial and conviction; they are calling for capital punishment for the culprits involved in this harrowing case. Furthermore, they have proposed that the house of the accused be demolished to serve as a deterrent to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This call for severe punitive measures highlights the community's outrage and the desire for significant actions that not only punish the guilty but also discourage such criminal activities in society. The community’s response, spearheaded by the Hindu Jagran Manch, underscores a collective stand against violence, particularly that which involves elements of religious coercion and severe personal violations. The case has evidently touched a nerve, leading to a broader discussion on how such serious crimes should be handled and the type of legal and societal reforms needed to prevent them in the future.
