"हमरा से पूछेगा, कंबल कुटाई होगा बबुआ": Making his aggressive supporters brutally beat two Hazaribagh journalists almost lifeless over tough questions, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari has sparked massive outrage and political uproar

The foundational role of a journalist is to ask the difficult questions on behalf of the public, but doing so recently came at a steep and violent cost in Jharkhand. On the 28th of April, the local journalistic community was left in shock after two reporters were brutally assaulted in Hazaribagh. The violence erupted simply because they dared to ask direct questions to Irfan Ansari, a prominent Congress leader and the state's Health Minister. In the wake of this alarming event, the opposition, spearheaded by leader Babulal Marandi, has forcefully demanded that strict legal action be taken against both the minister and his aggressive followers.

The timeline of the day began with what was supposed to be a solemn official visit. Minister Ansari arrived at the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College to meet with grieving families who had recently been impacted by multiple local tragedies. Following his interactions with these families, the minister stepped outside to address the gathered press. During this media interaction, journalists brought up the highly sensitive issue of the Chatra air ambulance crash. They pressed the minister on the reported delays in distributing compensation to the families of those victims. Rather than receiving a transparent answer, the line of questioning deeply irked the minister's supporters, instantly sparking chaos and unrest at the venue.

Violence Unfolds Before the Authorities
As the reporters stood their ground and continued to seek answers, the situation rapidly deteriorated. According to multiple media reports covering the incident, a large group of the minister’s supporters who were present at the gathering turned highly aggressive. They launched a physical assault on two media professionals: Sushant Soni, a journalist associated with News18, and Ashish Sav, another local reporter.
What makes this incident particularly disturbing are the accounts from eyewitnesses. Those present at the scene stated clearly that this brutal assault unfolded directly in the presence of both the minister and local police personnel. Tragically, reports indicate that neither the political leader nor the law enforcement officers intervened immediately to stop the beating. The two injured journalists were ultimately rescued not by the police, but by the bravery of their fellow media persons, who pulled them from the mob and rushed them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The shocking reality of this mob attack was caught on camera, and a disturbing video of the assault has since gone viral across various social media platforms, drawing widespread national condemnation.

Political Backlash Mounts Amidst Threats of Widespread Strikes
The political fallout from this event was immediate and severe. Babulal Marandi, the Leader of the Opposition, strongly criticized the violent attack on the press. He publicly demanded that a formal police case must be registered against both the perpetrators and the minister himself. Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Marandi shared the viral video of the incident, openly stating that the coordinated attack was carried out directly at the behest of the minister. Delivering a sharp rebuke regarding the responsibilities of public servants, Marandi noted, "If public questioning troubles ministers, they should reconsider their role in politics."
Furthermore, Marandi directed his demands to the highest office in the state, urging Chief Minister Hemant Soren to take immediate, decisive action to ensure absolute accountability in this grave matter. News outlets have closely tracked the political response; the media tried contacting Marandi for further comments but could not successfully connect with him.
Meanwhile, the local journalism community is refusing to back down. The reporters who witnessed the harrowing scene have warned of launching a massive statewide protest. They have made it abundantly clear that such violent attacks on media personnel cannot and will not be tolerated under any circumstances in a functioning democracy. Seeking justice, the journalists have formally submitted an application detailing the attack at the Sadar Police Station. However, as of now, it remains entirely unclear whether a First Information Report (FIR) has been officially registered by the authorities regarding the matter.
