A major breakthrough in a disturbing street harassment inquiry in Jamui, Bihar, has unexpectedly resolved a cold case that went unanswered for more than two decades. The father of the primary accused, Nandan Yadav, has been arrested for his alleged role in a fatal 2003 double homicide after spending nearly twenty-three years on the run. The man, identified in police records as Ganouri Yadav (also recorded as Ganauri or Ganori Yadav), was remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday, September 23, following his apprehension in Pratappur village.

The unresolved history dates back to April 3, 2003. On that day, an aggressive commercial dispute in Pratappur village turned deadly when two brothers, DP Yadav and Pune Yadav, were killed. Following the bloodshed, the victims’ mother, Sansari Devi, lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the local Town police station, specifically naming Ganouri as a key perpetrator alongside ten other individuals. The suspects faced serious legal charges, including murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and violations under the Arms Act. While investigators submitted a formal chargesheet and ten of the eleven defendants were either taken into custody, later granted bail, or went on to serve out their sentences, Ganouri broke away during the judicial process and vanished before trial. He remained the sole individual from the group who had avoided jail time.

His run ended only after his son, Nandan Yadav, became the center of a high-profile pursuit in Jamui.

On the evening of September 19, two local teenagers—a young girl and her male Class 10 friend, both enrolled at the same private coaching institute—were traveling home on a scooter after visiting a nearby scenic hill station. A group of men blocked their path along a Jamui road, shouted verbal abuses at them, and physically forced them off the two-wheeler. When the frightened pair attempted to escape, the aggressors chased them down.

The assault was recorded on mobile cameras and quickly circulated across social media platforms, sparking immediate public anger. In the footage, one attacker grabbed the teenage boy firmly by his shirt collar to prevent him from defending his companion or leaving the scene. The young girl endured even harsher violence. One assailant grabbed her from behind, subjected her to unwanted physical contact, and dragged her along the ground. When she attempted to break free, he hoisted her into his arms and carried her away while she folded her hands and desperately pleaded for mercy. Despite her cries, the crowd continued to humiliate and torment both students.

The circulation of the footage forced swift administrative intervention. Law enforcement authorities registered a case invoking stringent sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act alongside relevant assault provisions. A total of five individuals were swiftly taken into custody, including two juveniles. Tensions around the case ran high; during an appearance before the court, an advocate slapped one of the co-accused, Hareram Yadav. Meanwhile, Nandan Yadav attempted to evade capture and was shot in the leg by police officers during an armed confrontation while trying to escape.

As reported by major national outlets, including The Indian Express and India Today, the arrest of the father occurred directly through the manhunt for the son. Prior to tracking down Nandan, investigative teams conducted extensive raids on his family residence in Jamui and rounded up several relatives for questioning. During routine background verifications and subsequent custodial interrogations, detectives examined Ganouri’s personal records and matched him to the pending 2003 murder docket.

With the long-absent suspect finally behind bars, police officials confirmed that judicial proceedings against Ganouri will now be expedited to deliver long-delayed closure in the twenty-three-year-old double murder.
