"बंदे हैं हम उसके, हमपे किसका ज़ोर": A massive financial storm has hit the iconic Salar Masud Dargah in Bahraich after a decade of donation records vanished, dragging former SP minister Yasar Shah into allegations of a crores-level scam

The Salar Masud Dargah, located in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, has once again found itself at the center of a intense public and political dispute. The current crisis focuses heavily on the financial records and physical offerings presented at the sacred shrine. Severe allegations have surfaced indicating that a comprehensive, complete account of the donations and offerings received over several recent years is entirely unavailable. Even after the local district administration formally intervened and sought the official records, the financial details for multiple years could not reportedly be produced by the managers of the site.
This severe gap in documentation has fueled widespread suspicions of a major financial scam taking place behind the scenes. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have publicly alleged that an embezzlement scheme worth crores of rupees has occurred. Furthermore, the name of former Samajwadi Party (SP) minister Yasar Shah has also been dragged into the controversy by political opponents. In response to the growing storm, the Dargah Management Committee has firmly dismissed all of these allegations as completely baseless.

Dispute Escalates Over Shrine Offerings and Monies
As one of the country’s most well-known and highly revered shrines, the Salar Masud Dargah routinely attracts lakhs of devoted individuals every year. In addition to standard cash donations, these visiting devotees frequently offer gold, silver, and various other highly valuable items as tokens of their faith.
However, serious questions regarding the day-to-day management of the shrine’s donations and extensive properties intensified significantly after certain individuals closely associated with the Dargah, acting along with prominent BJP leaders, alleged that proper records of these offerings had not been maintained by the administration. These critics have further claimed that serious irregularities may have occurred in the handling of funds and valuable assets accumulated over the years.
Adding to the friction, some hereditary caretakers, historically known as khadims, have also step forward with their own grievances. They alleged that valuable gold and silver jewelry, which was once openly offered at the shrine by pilgrims, is no longer visible on the premises. These hereditary caretakers argued that if the ornaments remain safe and secure, they should be publicly displayed to reassure the public.

BJP Leadership Demands Official SIT Investigation
The unfolding controversy gained significant momentum after the BJP Minority Morcha’s Uttar Pradesh president, Kunwar Basil Ali, secured a formal meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to demand a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter.
During this high-profile meeting, Ali alleged large-scale irregularities in the management of the valuable properties and offerings associated directly with Waqf No. 19. He has explicitly demanded an impartial, thorough audit of all financial transactions spanning nearly two decades. In his appeal, Ali claimed that substantial misappropriation may have occurred regarding the donations, offerings, and various contributions received by the shrine over that extended timeframe.
As the political controversy escalated further across the state, Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Pratap Singh stepped in and reportedly sought a detailed report from Bahraich District Magistrate Akshay Tripathi, giving strict instructions for the official findings to be submitted within a 15-day window.

District Magistrate Initiates Financial Scrutiny
The administrative issue gained further attention when District Magistrate Akshay Tripathi acted on his directives and officially sought details of the shrine’s financial records. During the subsequent scrutiny of the submitted papers, it reportedly emerged that several crucial records relating to the offerings and total expenditure over the past decade were completely unavailable.
According to various official reports, the Dargah management failed to provide a complete financial account to the scrutinizing officers, prompting deep concerns over possible financial irregularities. Recognizing the severity of the matter, the District Magistrate has reportedly written an official letter to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board, explicitly highlighting the urgent need for a formal investigation.
Beyond the missing ledger books, questions have also been raised by investigators regarding staff appointments at the venue, with the management committee claiming that around 170 employees currently work at the shrine.
Allegations Target Former Samajwadi Party Minister
The financial controversy has also drawn in former Samajwadi Party minister Yasar Shah. Political leaders from the BJP have alleged that certain members of the active Dargah Management Committee, along with specific individuals linked directly to the former minister, actively protected these financial irregularities from outside scrutiny.
In light of these connections, Kunwar Basil Ali has specifically sought a targeted investigation into Shah’s alleged role in the matter, arguing that his personal involvement in the shrine’s finances should be examined independently by state authorities.
Dargah Committee Rejects Financial Charges
Defending their reputation, the Dargah Management Committee has categorically denied all allegations of theft and mismanagement. Senior committee member Dilshad Ahmad spoke out on behalf of the organization, describing the accusations of corruption and embezzlement as completely unfounded.
According to the official stance of the committee, all financial transactions are conducted strictly in accordance with the established Waqf Board regulations. The leadership claims that all incoming offerings are meticulously counted under continuous CCTV surveillance and the entire process is recorded, making any physical manipulation highly unlikely. Furthermore, the committee maintains that all staff appointments and administrative functions are carried out transparently.
A History of Recent Confrontations
The Salar Masud Dargah has been embroiled in controversies on several occasions in recent years, making this current financial dispute part of a longer series of public clashes.
In 2025, a major dispute arose over the organization of the annual Jeth Fair and the traditional Urs celebrations. This occurred after the Bahraich local administration officially refused permission for the event, citing pressing law-and-order concerns at the time. The legal matter eventually reached the Allahabad High Court and became the subject of intense political and social debate across Uttar Pradesh.
Another distinct controversy emerged more recently in June 2026, when Uttar Pradesh minister Anil Rajbhar publicly demanded that the Archaeological Survey of India conduct an archaeological survey of the shrine, arguing that its historical and archaeological aspects should be examined thoroughly by experts.
