‘India has never done anything to endanger Europe, but European weapons are used to attack India’: EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar delivers a fierce reality check to Western critics at Finland talks over Russian oil

Mirroring Reality: New Delhi Pushes Back Against Western Critique of Energy Choices

HELSINKI — In a striking display of diplomatic pushback, India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, firmly defended New Delhi’s ongoing acquisition of Russian crude oil. Speaking at the prestigious Kultaranta Talks in Finland, the Indian diplomat did not mince words, delivering a sharp reality check to the European media and political leaders gathered at the high-level event.

The setting was a highly anticipated panel discussion titled “Emerging Powers and the New Geopolitical Competition.” Sharing the stage with Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh, Dr. Jaishankar found himself under intense scrutiny. A moderator pointedly questioned India's energy policies, suggesting that New Delhi had adopted a stance of "moral equivalence" and had shown too much sympathy toward Moscow despite heavy Western sanctions.

Dr. Jaishankar dismantled the premise of the question by grounding India’s strategy in pure market realities.

“I buy oil based on cost and availability,” the External Affairs Minister stated flatly, shifting the focus from geopolitical alignment to economic necessity. Explaining the structural breakdown of the global energy supply chain following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he observed, “At that point, much of the oil available on the market was Russian because Europeans were essentially buying up the Middle East oil, which was our traditional supply. So circumstances pushed us in a certain direction.”

The Question of Morality

The dialogue shifted to a higher gear when the host explicitly asked about the perceived "moral ambiguity" of India's stance. Dr. Jaishankar used the moment to highlight historical and geopolitical inconsistencies in Western foreign policy. He pointed out that while European critics continuously scrutinize India's economic transactions, they ignore their own complex roles in global conflicts.

Turning the moral argument back onto his hosts, he noted that no European nation has ever faced aggression fueled by Indian defense exports. “I wish I could say that for European weapons vis-a-vis India,” he added dryly.

Pressing the point further to a visibly quiet room of European dignitaries and journalists, Dr. Jaishankar underscored a long-standing grievance regarding Western defense sales in South Asia:

“Europeans sell weapons which are used to attack India… for many years. We Indians have never done anything to endanger Europe.”

Global Energy Balance and Market Realities

The sharp exchange occurs against a backdrop of ongoing Western pressure on India. European nations have frequently attempted to corner New Delhi for its trade relationship with Moscow, even while many European states quietly continued their own purchases of Russian piped gas.

In a revealing addition to the defense of India’s policy, Dr. Jaishankar disclosed that Washington had actually seen the strategic benefit of New Delhi's moves. He revealed that the United States had specifically requested India to continue purchasing Russian oil during the initial shock of the 2022 sanctions, understanding that a total cutoff of Russian crude would spark a catastrophic spike in global inflation.

India's Adaptive StrategyMinimal reliance on Russian energy importsAbsorbed discounted Russian crude to balance domestic inflation

Following the sweeping shifts in international energy flows, India has successfully transformed into one of the largest buyers of discounted Russian oil. Today, this crude makes up a vital segment of the nation’s total energy imports. By stepping in to absorb this supply, New Delhi has not only shielded its own massive population from soaring domestic fuel prices, but it has also acted as a crucial safety valve for the rest of the world, playing a major role in keeping global energy prices steady.
