Malaysia: Radical Preacher Zamri Vinoth Detained for Targeting Hindu Temples During Indian PM's VisitKuala Lumpur

In a decisive move to maintain public order during a high-profile diplomatic event, Malaysian authorities have taken controversial Islamic preacher Mohammed Zamri Vinoth into custody. The arrest occurred on the evening of Saturday, February 7, thwarting a planned demonstration in the heart of the capital that threatened to disrupt communal harmony.

The police intervened before the gathering could gain momentum. The rally, which had been organized to take place at 9 pm outside the popular Sogo department store in the city center, was effectively blocked by security forces who cited significant safety concerns.

Law Enforcement Crackdown

Following the operation, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus issued a formal statement confirming the detention of the radical preacher. Addressing the public through social media, he stated, “The arrest involved Zamri Vinoth and several other people.”

He further elaborated on the situation, noting, “I can confirm the arrest of Zamri Vinoth along with other named individuals.” While immediate specifics were kept brief to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation, the police chief assured the press and the public that further details would be shared at a press conference scheduled for the future.

The crackdown was not limited to Zamri alone. Police rounded up a significant number of his associates and supporters who were allegedly involved in organizing the unrest. Among those reported arrested were high-profile figures such as lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla and Shafiq Abdul Halim, the information chief for the Bersatu party’s Hulu Langat division.

The list of detainees also included Hishamuddin Abu Bakar from the non-governmental organization Ummah, Iskandar Khoo of Bersatu, and Gulab Jan from the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM). Tamim Dahari Abd Razak, a website owner associated with the group, was also taken into custody. Additionally, police detained another man at the scene for failing to adhere to instructions issued by law enforcement officers; he was transported to the same station for processing.

A Heavy Security Presence

The atmosphere around the Sogo department store was tense but controlled. To prevent any potential outbreak of violence, the authorities established a massive security cordon involving a total of 200 police officers. This deployment included the specialized Light Strike Force, which patrolled the area to deter any gathering.

Dang Wangi police chief, Sazalee Adam, was present on the ground to manage the situation. He addressed the small crowd that had attempted to assemble, firmly ordering them to disperse. The swift police action ensured that by 10 pm, the area was quiet and order had been fully restored.

Zero Tolerance for Racial Tension

The arrests followed a stern warning issued earlier in the day by the country’s top leadership. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had made a public appeal for calm, explicitly warning against any actions that could incite social instability. In a strong message to those planning to disrupt the peace, Anwar stated, “If they breach the laws and try to cause racial tension, arrest them and throw them out.”

Political leaders have rallied behind the police action. Following the news of the arrests, Jelutong Member of Parliament RSN Rayer called on the judiciary and police to remain firm. He urged authorities not to release Zamri on bail, arguing that given the gravity of the offense, he should be kept in remand and charged in court. Rayer emphasized the principle that no one is above the law, regardless of their religious or political stature.

Diplomatic Context: The Modi Visit

The attempted rally was timed to coincide with a significant diplomatic milestone. The unrest was planned amidst Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day state visit to Malaysia, scheduled for February 7 and 8. This visit is critical for both nations as they aim to strengthen bilateral ties, following the upgrade of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership the previous year.Provocation and Background
Tensions had been simmering prior to the visit. In the days leading up to the arrests, Zamri Vinoth had utilized social media to incite his followers. On Facebook, he announced his intention to organize a rally specifically targeting what he termed “illegal” Hindu temples.

In his incendiary post, he called upon supporters to congregate outside Sogo KL, claiming they would “fight against intruders.” These comments were widely interpreted as a direct attack on Malaysia’s Hindu minority community, raising alarms about potential communal violence.

Zamri, who is of Malaysian Tamil descent and was known as Vinoth Kalimuthu before his conversion to Islam, has a history of making provocative statements regarding Hinduism. He is also known to be a staunch follower of Zakir Naik, the Indian fugitive and controversial preacher who has been granted asylum in Malaysia.

Recognizing the potential for these actions to mar the state visit and harm public safety, authorities had previously directed that the rally should not proceed. By enforcing this ban, the Malaysian police have prioritized the preservation of communal harmony and the safety of the public during this crucial diplomatic window.
