Extremists carry out stone pelting on Hindu temple procession in Bengaluru’s Jagjeevan Ram Nagar, injuring a girl and a child, as devotees speak of long years of fear, street harassment, and seek police action

On the evening of 4 January, a tense situation unfolded in Bengaluru’s Jagjeevan Ram Nagar after stones were thrown at a Hindu religious procession, leaving two people injured.

The incident took place at around 8 pm near VS Garden, when devotees were pulling a deity’s chariot as part of a traditional procession that had begun from the nearby Om Shakti temple. What was meant to be a peaceful religious event quickly turned alarming, spreading fear and concern among those present.
According to information shared by the police, stones were hurled at the procession from nearby areas under the cover of darkness. It is reported that the attackers were youths belonging to the Muslim community living in the surrounding locality. The sudden attack caused panic among the devotees, many of whom included women and children participating in the procession.
A police officer confirmed that a formal complaint related to the incident has been received. During the stone-pelting, a young girl suffered a head injury, and a child was also hit on the head. Both injured individuals were immediately taken for medical treatment. The police stated that their condition is stable, which brought some relief to the families and the community.

Following the incident, anger and frustration grew rapidly. A large number of people gathered outside the JJ Nagar Police Station, demanding immediate and strict action against those responsible for the attack. Several Hindu organisations also voiced strong protest, condemning the targeting of devotees during a religious procession.
During the protest, demonstrators alleged that the attackers belonged to the Muslim community. The police responded by stating that these allegations are currently under investigation. Officials assured that all aspects of the incident will be examined carefully and that conclusions will be drawn only after verifying the facts. The police emphasized that no assumptions would be made without proper inquiry.

However, the protesting Hindu devotees went beyond the incident of that evening and shared deeper concerns about their daily lives in the area. They stated that such incidents are not new and that they regularly face harassment in the neighbourhood. Many expressed that they live in constant fear and requested the construction of a protective wall to prevent further attacks. Protesters claimed that women and children are often targeted while walking on the streets, making daily movement unsafe. They further said that it has become extremely difficult for girls to use the roads freely. The complainants also alleged that those who raise their voices or try to protest are later identified and harassed. They appealed to the government for protection and safety.
The authorities confirmed that a formal case has been registered and that efforts are underway to identify those involved in the attack. Police officials stated clearly, “Necessary action will be taken against those involved once their identities are established.” To prevent any further escalation of tension, security arrangements were strengthened. Additional police personnel were deployed at the location of the incident and around the police station to maintain law and order.
Bengaluru West Deputy Commissioner N. Yathish addressed the situation and said that police forces have been stationed in the area as a precautionary measure. He added that the situation is currently under control. He also confirmed that the allegations made by the protesters are being thoroughly investigated, and the findings of the inquiry will determine the next course of action.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about communal harmony, public safety, and the sense of security among residents, especially women and children, in sensitive areas of the city.
