Police station surrounded, chants of “Allahu Akbar” ring out, Hindu gods abused as Muslim mob creates chaos in Shahjahanpur over Prophet Muhammad and Quran post

On the evening of Friday, 12th September, a serious incident shook Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. Reports revealed that a controversial social media post, containing remarks about Prophet Mohammad and the Quran, triggered anger among a section of the Muslim community. The reaction was immediate and explosive. Hundreds gathered outside the local police station, chanting slogans such as “Hand over the accused” and “Allahu Akbar.”
The mob did not stop at demands alone. Abusive language was also directed at Hindu Gods and Goddesses, escalating communal tension in the area. Despite the police acting swiftly and arresting the accused behind the post, the uproar continued for nearly three hours. Opportunistic anti-social elements mixed in with the crowd and tried to worsen the situation further. When repeated attempts to calm tempers failed, the police were left with no choice but to use a lathi charge to break up the gathering.

Uproar Sparked by Offensive Comments on Social Media
The entire chain of events began at around 6:30 pm on September 12, when a social media user uploaded a remark that directly targeted Prophet Muhammad and the Quran. The post circulated quickly and inflamed anger within the Muslim community. In retaliation, some youths allegedly responded with derogatory comments about Hindu gods and goddesses, adding fuel to the already tense situation.
The matter was soon reported by Qasim Raza, a respected member of the local Idgah Committee, who informed the police. By then, tempers had risen sharply, and a crowd began to swell outside the police station. Chants demanding strict action grew louder. Cries of “Hand over the accused” and “Allahu Akbar” echoed as the mob became increasingly aggressive. Reports say that the crowd even attempted to storm the police station in order to seize the accused directly.

Mob Surrounded the Police Station
The authorities responded without delay. An FIR was registered against the accused and he was arrested immediately. However, this did little to restore peace. The crowd remained gathered around the police station, refusing to leave.
Police officers tried to reason with them, even reaching out to local maulanas from the Muslim community, asking them to calm the situation. But the people did not listen. With the tension only rising, the police eventually had to resort to a lathi charge. Panic broke out, leading to a stampede as the crowd ran in different directions. After nearly three hours of chaos, the situation finally came under control.

Administration Appeals for Peace
Once order was restored, the district administration made a formal appeal for peace. District Magistrate Dharmendra Pratap Singh stated that the administration had taken the incident very seriously and action had already been taken against the accused. He urged people to avoid believing or spreading rumours, warning that “some anti-social elements trying to spoil the atmosphere will be brought to justice.”
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi assured that the police had acted immediately and succeeded in controlling the crisis. He too requested citizens to maintain calm and peace.
Flag March Conducted to Reinforce Control
To ensure that law and order remained intact, DM Dharmendra Pratap Singh and SP Rajesh Dwivedi carried out a flag march. They were joined by forces from seven police stations along with the Quick Response Team (QRT). Their presence reassured the public and helped settle remaining fears.
Officials later said that they also spoke to groups of people who were sitting on the road in protest. The District Magistrate clarified that “no information on stone pelting has been received,” and that the police were keeping a close watch on the developments.
Although the incident had thrown Shahjahanpur into tension, the prompt actions of the police and administration prevented further escalation. Authorities repeated their appeal for peace and requested everyone to remain cautious and not fall prey to rumours.
