"तोमरा आमाके रोक्तो दाओ, आमी तोमादेर स्वाधीनता देबो": Driven by the profound courage of Kalita Majhi, Rekha Patra, and Ratna Debnath, BJP secured a historic West Bengal victory over TMC, proving real grassroots women can change the state

Before entering politics in 2021, Kalita Majhi worked as a domestic help earning around Rs 2,500 monthly from four households in the Guskara municipality.

A Landmark Mandate and the Rise of Unlikely Women Leaders

The 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal have entirely rewritten the political history of the state. Securing an overwhelming 206 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed its very first state government victory in Bengal. During the counting process, opposition parties spent much of their time loudly claiming that the Election Commission of India (ECI) was compromised. However, a deeper look at the ground reality reveals a different story. The BJP’s monumental success was built on carefully choosing their candidates and focusing heavily on the everyday, real issues affecting the citizens.

A key factor in this victory was the inclusion of women candidates who came directly from the grassroots level. These women brought their real-life hardships, deep pain, and a profound desire for change directly to the voting public. Their genuine stories created a strong emotional bond that deeply resonated with the Bengali voters.

To understand the weight of this historic 2026 election, it is important to look back at the timeline of events that built up to this political shift.

A Decade of Growing Unrest (2012 to 2022)

For over a decade under the rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state witnessed a steady and severe collapse in law and order. The public became accustomed to political killings, riots, and a horrific rise in brutalities against women. While TMC members were frequently accused of committing crimes without facing any consequences, the party leadership was often seen providing them with a protective cover.

This pattern of ignoring the pain of victims has deep historical roots. Back in 2012, during the tragic Park Street rape case involving an Anglo-Indian woman named Suzette Jordan, Chief Minister Banerjee dismissed the horrific event as a 'shajano ghotona'—a concocted incident allegedly designed only to make her government look bad. Despite TMC leaders constantly questioning the victim's morals and character, a court in Kolkata eventually stepped in, upheld the rape charges, and found the three accused men guilty.

The insensitive approach from the top leadership continued. By 2013, the Chief Minister had shockingly blamed the increasing number of rape cases in West Bengal on modernization and a growing population. The situation only worsened over time. Following the 2021 assembly elections, crimes against women spiked significantly. A year later, in April 2022, the Chief Minister sparked public anger once more by attempting to downplay the brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl, describing it simply as a 'love affair' that had gone wrong.

A Domestic Worker Rises: BJP’s Kalita Majhi Overcomes TMC Rival Securing A 12,535 Vote Lead

It was within this difficult political climate that ordinary women began stepping up to challenge the system. One of the most inspiring examples is Kalita Majhi. Before she ever entered politics in 2021, Majhi worked tirelessly as a domestic helper. She managed household chores for four different families in the Guskara municipality, earning a very modest income of around Rs 2,500 every month.

Recognizing her strong, genuine ties to the local community, the BJP decided to field her as their candidate for the Ausgram assembly seat in the 2021 elections. Although she fought a brave campaign, she lost the contest that year to the TMC candidate, Abhedananda Thander. However, instead of pushing her aside or abandoning her after the loss, the BJP stood by her. The party knew that her connection with the local people was powerful and that, with the right political messaging and campaign support, it could turn into a victory.

The Breaking Point (2024): Sandeshkhali and RG Kar Protests

While Majhi continued her groundwork, the state of West Bengal was rocked by back-to-back tragedies in 2024 that completely exposed the systemic failures of the ruling government.

In February 2024, the region of Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district erupted in massive protests. Hundreds of local women poured into the streets to demonstrate against severe abuses, including the non-payment of fair wages, illegal land grabbing, and horrific sexual violence. The accused perpetrators were local Trinamool Congress strongman Sheikh Shahjahan and two of his closely associated aides, Shiba Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar.

Rekha Patra: Transitioning From Sandeshkhali Protest Leader And 2024 Lok Sabha Defeat To Claiming The Hingalganj Assembly Seat In 2026

The very first woman in Sandeshkhali to bravely step forward and lead these protests was Rekha Patra. As a victim herself, raising her voice against these powerful men immediately made her a prime target for angry TMC supporters.

Instead of addressing the severe allegations of sexual exploitation and harassment carried out by her party's goons, Mamata Banerjee attempted to minimize the situation. During a public meeting held in Birbhum in February 2024, the Chief Minister casually referred to the massive unrest in Sandeshkhali as a ‘minor incident,’ placing the blame on the media and the BJP for making it a public issue. Around 55:15 minutes into the broadcasted program, the Chief Minister stated verbatim:

"An incident has happened or rather made to happen. First, they sent the ED (Enforcement Directorate), then its friend BJP, entered the scene."

A few months later, in May 2024, Banerjee doubled down on this defensive narrative, directly claiming the entire movement was a fake setup. She declared to the press:

"The entire Sandeshkhali incident was preplanned. The BJP had scripted it. The truth has been exposed. I have been saying this for a long time,"

Despite these personal attacks from the highest levels of the state government, Rekha Patra kept fighting. The BJP proudly stood behind her, nominating her from the Basirhat seat for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. During that fiercely fought campaign, the TMC stooped to the level of leaking her sensitive private information to the public. While this dirty tactic contributed to Patra losing the Lok Sabha election to her TMC rival, she never lost the trust of her party. The BJP remained completely committed to supporting her ongoing fight against the TMC-linked criminals involved in the Sandeshkhali land grabbing and sexual abuse cases.

Also in 2024, the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital shocked the entire nation. It highlighted a complete failure of the state to protect its citizens. Instead of taking the protests by the medical community seriously, the state government launched a harsh crackdown on the very people demanding answers. Junior doctors who bravely led the protests against the gruesome crime faced immense persecution. The state targeted them legally, financially, and professionally. For simply seeking justice and basic accountability, these young professionals were hit with undue job transfers, court cases, and strict police FIRs under serious charges such as ‘unlawful assembly’ and ‘causing grievous hurt to police personnel.’

Despite this highly questionable track record of victim-blaming and ignoring women's safety, a specific group of left-liberal commentators continued to praise Mamata Banerjee as an icon of female empowerment. They consistently used her status as the "only woman Chief Minister" in the country as a rhetorical shield to cover up her government's massive neglect of real women's issues.

The Final Statistics and the Tipping Point (2025)

By the end of 2025, the reality of women's safety in Bengal was undeniable, cemented by both official government statistics and heartbreaking local tragedies.

In October 2025, the state was horrified once again when a second-year MBBS student, originally from Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped in a jungle area near Durgapur city. The accused men were identified as Apu Bauri, Firdos Sekh, Sekh Reajuddin, and two other accomplices. This incident completely shattered whatever little faith the public had left in the administration's ability to protect its residents. The victim's father openly expressed his terror, stating clearly that his daughter was no longer safe in the state. Speaking to the media, he heartbreakingly noted:

"Trust has been lost. We don’t want her to stay in Bengal. She will pursue her education in Odisha,"

During that exact same month, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its official report, painting a grim and authentic picture of the crisis. According to the documented data, West Bengal, despite being led by a woman, had become an incredibly dangerous place for female citizens. The official numbers recorded 34,691 cases of crimes against women under Special and Local Laws (SLL) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Although this represented a very marginal decline from the 34,738 cases officially reported in 2022, it remained one of the absolute highest numbers in the entire country.

To put these statistics into perspective, this translated to an alarming crime rate of 71.3 cases for every one lakh women. The data was even worse in specific categories. For incidents involving the kidnapping and abduction of women (categorized under Sections 363A, 365, 367, 368, and 369 of the IPC), West Bengal topped the national charts, recording a massive 2,054 incidents out of the total 7,964 cases documented across all of India.

Ratna Debnath: The Powerful Journey Of A Grieving Mother Seeking Justice For The RG Kar Medical College Victim Through Politics

This long timeline of neglect and tragedy perfectly set the stage for the historic 2026 assembly elections. In the Panihati constituency, the BJP made a deeply impactful decision. They chose not to field a seasoned, wealthy politician or a famous celebrity. Instead, they nominated a grieving mother.

Ratna Debnath, the mother of the junior doctor brutally killed at RG Kar Medical College, had been deeply disappointed by the TMC regime's complete failure to deliver justice for her daughter. Driven by her profound sorrow and frustration, Debnath spoke directly to the press in March 2026, proudly announcing her desire to run in the upcoming West Bengal Vidhan Sabha elections on a BJP ticket. Speaking with absolute clarity about the state's failures, she stated:

"women’s safety and security, and the well-being of people, are greatly compromised here in Bengal."

She made a fierce, public vow to completely uproot the Trinamool Congress from the state. In response, online trolls supporting the TMC cruelly mocked her, labelling her 'India’s Erika Kirk' in an attempt to belittle her fight. But she remained entirely unbroken.

Just over a month after her announcement, Debnath watched her vow become a reality. The voters of Panihati completely understood her pain and recognized the BJP’s honest intentions, which went far beyond simple electoral strategy. She secured a total of 87,977 votes, completely demolishing the TMC’s evil empire in her district by defeating TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh with a massive winning margin of 28,836 votes.

Simultaneously, the BJP's faith in their previously defeated candidates paid off immensely.

Kalita Majhi, the former domestic worker who had stayed deeply connected to her community since her 2021 defeat, achieved a massive victory. Nominated once again for the Ausgram seat, she received 107,692 votes, successfully defeating TMC's Shyama Prasanna Lohar with a solid margin of 12,535 votes.

Similarly, Rekha Patra, the face of the Sandeshkhali resistance, finally found her political vindication. After the heartbreak of the 2024 Lok Sabha loss, the BJP nominated her for the Hingalganj assembly seat in 2026. Her unyielding determination paid off as she gathered a total of 100,207 votes, defeating her TMC opponent, Ananda Sarkar, by a comfortable margin of 5,421 votes.

The Final Outcome

While the Trinamool Congress may have constantly boasted about having a symbolic female leader at the top, they entirely failed the ordinary women living at the grassroots level. For the sake of political power, the TMC government allowed a toxic culture of impunity to thrive in several pockets across the state. The arrogance of the party leaders, combined with their reliance on old intimidation tactics, completely blinded them to the massive, widespread anger that ordinary women harbored toward them.

The BJP, however, did not miss this critical shift in public sentiment. They did not merely politicize the issue of women's safety; they actively gave a powerful voice to the very victims of the TMC’s misrule. By facilitating their entrance into politics, the BJP helped these women change the broken 'system' that had failed them. They completely shattered the outdated notion that only the elite and wealthy can properly represent women’s issues in the legislature.

The final election numbers served as the ultimate proof of this strategy's success. The BJP's female candidates achieved an incredibly impressive strike rate of 65%.

In a conclusion that can only be described as absolute poetic justice, while ordinary women with no prior political backgrounds scored massive victories across the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a humiliating defeat on her own home turf. In the Bhabanipur constituency, she was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a massive gap of 15,000 votes. By the end of the final round of counting, Adhikari had firmly secured 73,463 votes, leaving Banerjee trailing far behind with only 58,349 votes. The victories of women like Kalita Majhi, Ratna Debnath, and Rekha Patra firmly proved that the TMC suffered from a fatal disconnect with reality, ultimately leading to their historic downfall.
