At just 23, Lt. Shashank Tiwari of Sikkim Scouts attained martyrdom while heroically saving a comrade in North Sikkim, leaving behind a proud legacy of courage, honor & selfless service that continues to inspire a grateful nation and his hometown Ayodhya

In an incredible and heart-wrenching display of bravery, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the Indian Army's SIKKIM SCOUTS laid down his life while rescuing a fellow soldier during a mission in the rugged terrain of North Sikkim. His selfless actions on 22 May 2025 have etched his name into the proud and courageous legacy of the Indian Armed Forces.
Lieutenant Tiwari, just six months into service and only 23 years old, showed a level of bravery far beyond his years. During an operational patrol in the icy high-altitude region of North Sikkim, he saw a teammate struggling in a dangerous, fast-moving mountain stream. Without a moment of hesitation, he jumped into the freezing waters to save the soldier. Although he managed to pull his fellow soldier to safety, Lt. Tiwari tragically lost his own life in the process.
The Indian Army's Eastern Command honored him with a solemn tribute, stating: “Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, #ArmyCdrEC, and all ranks offer heartfelt condolences on the loss of Lt Shashank Tiwari, who made the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing a comrade during an operational patrol in the high-altitude area of #NorthSikkim.”

The Incident: What Happened in North Sikkim?
On that Thursday morning, Lieutenant Tiwari was leading a Route Opening Patrol team toward a Tactical Operating Base (TOB) in North Sikkim. The team was on a critical mission, heading to a forward base being set up for future deployments—a task that demanded both precision and courage at such altitudes.
At approximately 11 a.m., a young soldier from the team, Agniveer Stephan Subba, lost his footing while attempting to cross a makeshift log bridge across a powerful mountain stream. He was immediately swept away by the swift current, the kind of treacherous waters that can easily take a life within seconds.
Without thinking twice, Lieutenant Tiwari demonstrated "remarkable presence of mind, selfless leadership, and unwavering commitment to his team". He leapt into the icy current to save the drowning soldier. His instinct and courage were quickly matched by Naik Pukar Katel, who also entered the water to help. Together, they managed to pull Agniveer Subba to safety.
But the rescue came at a heavy price. While Subba survived, Lt. Tiwari was caught by the fierce current. Despite immediate efforts from his team, he was found only after a harrowing 30-minute search, approximately 800 meters downstream.
The Indian Army released a statement to commemorate him, saying: “His bravery and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations.” This message came as a tribute to a man who had been commissioned just six months before the tragedy, yet gave his life in one of the noblest ways possible—saving another.
Lt. Tiwari’s actions reflected the finest values that the Indian Army upholds: selfless service, integrity, leadership by example, and the unbreakable bond between officers and men. He lived and died by those ideals.
At only 23, he set an example that would live on far beyond his years. His story is not just about military duty; it is about human courage, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to others. He is survived by his parents and his sister, who now carry the memory of a young man who became a national hero.

The Man Behind the Uniform: Who Was Lt. Shashank Tiwari?
Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari hailed from Gadopur Majhwa village in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. He was the only child of his parents, a fact that makes his sacrifice all the more poignant. According to The Times of India, his father, Jung Bahadur Tiwari, is a retired seaman from the Indian Merchant Navy. His family and community remember him as a disciplined, dedicated, and bright young man.
In a statement by the Defence Ministry, his sacrifice was honored with the words: “His sacrifice has been hailed nationwide. He stands as a symbol of courage and selflessness.”
Lt. Tiwari’s uncle, Rajesh Dubey, shared with The Hindustan Times that from an early age, Tiwari had only one dream—to serve the nation. A stellar student, he finished school in Faizabad, passing his intermediate exams in 2019. Soon after, he earned selection into the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA).
He was officially commissioned into the Sikkim Scouts unit on 14 December 2024, beginning a promising military career that, though brief, ended with a heroic legacy.
Even political leaders paid their respects. In a heartfelt post, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang wrote: “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, who laid down his life while on patrol in the severe terrain of North Sikkim. His courage, sense of duty, and commitment to the country will forever be remembered. On behalf of the people of Sikkim, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We honour his sacrifice with the utmost respect and gratitude.”
Following the tragic event, Lt. Tiwari’s body was transported from Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri to his hometown in Ayodhya on Friday. According to Ayodhya SP (City) Madhuban Singh, his remains arrived that evening. His funeral was conducted with full military honors.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally paid homage to the fallen soldier. During his visit to Ayodhya, he announced two important gestures to honor the officer's sacrifice: a memorial in his name and financial support of ₹50 lakh for his family.
In its final tribute, the Indian Army stated that “his actions reflect the very ethos of the force—selfless service, integrity, and leadership by example.” The message underlined how his ultimate sacrifice represents the deep bond shared between officers and their men, not just in wartime but always.
