On the afternoon of Saturday, September 5, 2026, along the Doda-Kishtwar National Highway, the glacial waters of the Chenab River were running deep, grey, and ferocious. The river cuts a treacherous chasm through Jammu and Kashmir’s rugged highlands, where steel-truss and concrete bridges connect isolated mountain settlements to district hubs. At approximately 2:00 PM, near the small transit settlement of Prem Nagar, a two-wheeler came to a sudden halt near the pedestrian walkway of the Shiva Dal bridge.
