A devastating Pakistan Army Mi-17 helicopter crash near Muzaffarabad has tragically killed all twenty-one personnel on board, unfolding as violent anti-government protests grip the region of PoK

A military disaster has struck the region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following a devastating aviation accident near its capital. On Wednesday, a Pakistan Army Mi-17 medium-lift transport helicopter crashed during takeoff near the city of Muzaffarabad. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), which serves as the media wing of the Pakistani military, has officially confirmed that all 21 personnel on board the aircraft lost their lives in the tragic event.

According to the official military statement issued shortly after the disaster, the Russian-made aircraft went down due to a severe technical fault that manifested just moments after it became airborne from a local helipad. The unexpected mechanical failure left the crew completely unable to stabilize the helicopter.
The Inter-Services Public Relations statement officially announced the catastrophic outcome of the event, stating: “All personnel on board embraced shahadat. There were no survivors.” The military media wing further noted that specialized rescue and recovery teams were dispatched immediately and reached the crash site without delay to handle the aftermath. In order to thoroughly investigate the mechanical breakdown, a board of inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the precise technical cause of the accident.
In the wake of the incident, the highest echelons of the Pakistani defense and political establishments offered their public condolences. The ISPR conveyed that Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and all ranks of the army “express deep grief over the tragic loss of precious lives and extend heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families”.

Alongside the military leadership, senior Pakistani political leaders, including Army Chief General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have expressed deep grief and extended condolences to the families of the deceased. The Pakistan Army has officially honored the victims, describing the personnel as having made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating widely across various social media platforms captured the grim moments following the impact. The videos show thick plumes of heavy black smoke rising high over the hilly, densely populated valley near Muzaffarabad, drawing crowds of anxious local onlookers. The Mi-17 helicopter model has long been regarded as a reliable workhorse of the Pakistan Army Aviation branch, heavily relied upon for critical troop transport and logistics operations across the highly challenging, high-altitude terrain of the region. While the model has unfortunately been involved in similar technical mishaps in the past, this crash stands out as the first major incident of its kind in the current year.

This aviation tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of severe regional instability, occurring amid heightened tensions and widespread unrest across PoK. For several consecutive days, the territory has been gripped by intense anti-government protests led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Demonstrators have flooded the streets to voice severe economic grievances, demanding cheaper electricity, wheat subsidies, hydropower royalties, and greater political autonomy from Islamabad.
These civil demonstrations have repeatedly turned violent, with intense clashes erupting in places like Rawalakot in the region, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries on both sides. The civil unrest reached a boiling point when a complete shutdown call on Tuesday brought major cities, including Muzaffarabad, to an absolute standstill. Reports from the ground indicate a heavy humanitarian toll from the state's response, as 27 people have been killed in firing by the Pakistani military on protestors during the shutdown.
Given the volatile climate and the fact that the crash occurred in a zone experiencing heavy civil resistance, rumors regarding the nature of the crash circulated quickly. However, Pakistani officials have ruled out any hostile action in the helicopter incident, despite speculation in some quarters, maintaining that a purely internal mechanical failure brought down the transport vehicle.
