Citing a Nobel snub, Trump tells Norway he is no longer bound by peace, demanding Greenland as a strategic consolation prize and threatening tariffs on Europe until the Arctic island is surrendered

In a stark diplomatic missive that has escalated tensions in the Arctic, US President Donald Trump has sent a blunt letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The correspondence explicitly links the Nobel Committee’s decision to withhold the Peace Prize from him to his hardened resolve regarding Greenland, with the President stating he is "no longer obliged to think purely of Peace."

According to a copy of the letter obtained by Bloomberg, the message—which was first brought to public attention by a PBS journalist on the platform X—was not kept private between the two leaders. Instead, the US National Security Council (NSC) circulated the document to multiple other European governments, highlighting Washington’s intention to make its position widely known across the continent.

In the text, President Trump vented his frustration regarding the lack of recognition for his conflict resolution efforts, using it to justify a shift in priority toward American strategic interests.
“Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT,” Trump wrote, as reported by Bloomberg.

Addressing the controversy, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre clarified that the letter was not a random outburst but a reply to a diplomatic outreach. Støre explained that the US President’s message was sent in reaction to a brief text he had conveyed earlier.
“Trump’s message came in response to a short text message to President Trump from me earlier in the day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb,” Støre said.

The Prime Minister further emphasized that there is a fundamental misunderstanding regarding how the award is granted. He noted that he has tried to inform the President that the government in Oslo does not control the selection process.
“I have repeatedly clearly explained to Trump that it is an independent committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize,” he stated.
This exchange follows a week of disbelief in Norway after the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, María Corina Machado, physically handed her medal to President Trump. Trump, who has long coveted the award and claims he deserves it for resolving multiple conflicts during his second term, accepted the medal during a meeting with the Venezuelan opposition leader at the White House.
The unprecedented transfer of the medal prompted a swift and firm clarification from the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday.

“The Nobel Prize and the laureate are inseparable,” the committee said in a statement. “Even if the medal or diploma later comes into someone else’s possession, this does not alter who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”
President Trump’s letter to the Norwegian Prime Minister is the latest in a series of public statements where he has accused Denmark of failing to counter what he describes as a looming Russian security threat in the Arctic. Earlier on Sunday, Trump declared that Denmark had been unable to remove the “Russian threat” from Greenland, adding, “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”
He expanded on this rationale on his social media platform, Truth Social, arguing that the military alliance has been aware of the issue for decades.
“NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that ‘you have to get Russian threat away from Greenland.’ Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it,” Trump wrote.
The President has repeatedly stated that he will settle for nothing less than full ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory that remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected Trump’s position, insisting that the island is not for sale and that the people of Greenland do not wish to become part of the United States.
The pressure campaign has now expanded into the economic realm. On Saturday, Trump vowed to impose a wave of escalating tariffs on European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland.
