As temples burn and Hindus face brutal murder in Bangladesh, UK MP Bob Blackman urgently demands protection for minorities and fair elections before Sheikh Hasina’s party is barred from February voting

According to Blackman, holding an election without the participation of the country’s major opposition party undermines the very concept of democracy.

‘Murdered on the Streets’: UK MP Sounds Alarm on Atrocities Against Hindus in Bangladesh

London – A chilling account of religious persecution in Bangladesh was brought to the floor of the British Parliament this Thursday (January 15th), as senior Conservative MP Bob Blackman highlighted the escalating violence against Hindus and other minorities. In a passionate appeal, he urged the UK government to intervene before the situation deteriorates further.

Speaking during the pre-recess adjournment debate in the House of Commons, Blackman drew attention to the "disastrous" reality facing minority communities under the current interim regime in Dhaka. He referenced his previous attempts to flag the crisis, noting a lack of improvement on the ground.

“Now, at the pre-recess adjournment debate, Madam Deputy Speaker, I raised the situation of Bangladesh, and the Leader quite rightly wrote to the Foreign Secretary about the disastrous situation that is there now,” Blackman stated.A Campaign of Violence
The MP provided a grim description of the daily threats facing the Hindu community, painting a picture of lawlessness where targeted attacks have become commonplace. He emphasized that these are not merely political disputes, but violent assaults on life and faith.“Hindu men are being murdered on the streets, their houses (are) being burnt, the temples are being burnt, and other religious minorities are suffering similar fates,” he emphasized, stressing the brutality of the crackdown.Electoral Concerns and the Rise of Extremism
Beyond the immediate violence, Blackman expressed deep concern regarding the legitimacy of Bangladesh’s upcoming general elections, scheduled for February 12. He pointed out a glaring democratic deficit: the banning of the Awami League, the party of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to Blackman, holding an election without the participation of the country’s major opposition party undermines the very concept of democracy. He also warned of a more sinister long-term threat posed by rising Islamist factions who are pushing for fundamental changes to the nation's identity.

"Next month, there are due to be so-called free and fair elections. The Awami League, which is a major political party in Bangladesh, is banned from competing in those elections, despite commanding about 30 per cent in the opinion polls. Equally, the Islamic extremists have called for a referendum which would change the constitution of Bangladesh forever," he further said.Diplomatic Pressure and Shared Concerns
Blackman demanded that the UK Foreign Secretary issue a clear statement outlining what steps the Labour government will take to ensure the safety of minorities and guarantee that the elections are truly inclusive.

The political backdrop in Bangladesh remains volatile. Following violent protests last year that led to Sheikh Hasina fleeing to India, the country has been ruled by an interim government led by Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, with the backing of the army. Meanwhile, courts in Bangladesh have sentenced the exiled Hasina to death over “crimes against humanity.”

Blackman’s call for action is supported by his peers. He was one of four MPs—alongside Jim Shannon, Jas Athwal, and Chris Law—who signed a joint statement expressing grave concerns about the exclusion of the Awami League and other popular parties from the democratic process.

India Calls for Firm Action
The unrest has also drawn a sharp response from neighboring India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi has publicly condemned the violence, urging the Bangladeshi authorities to restore order and protect vulnerable groups.

Responding to queries during a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India's stance on the need for accountability.

"We continue to witness a disturbing pattern of recurring attacks on minorities as well as their homes and businesses by extremists in Bangladesh. Such communal incidents need to be dealt with swiftly and firmly," Jaiswal said.A Long-Standing Advocate
Bob Blackman is well-known for his deep engagement with South Asian geopolitics. Beyond the current crisis in Bangladesh, he recently reaffirmed his staunch support for India’s territorial integrity regarding Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that the entire region belongs to India and decried Pakistan's occupation of the area. He also noted that his support for the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 by the Narendra Modi government is consistent with a position he has held for over three decades.
