Russia launches Oreshnik hypersonic missile for second time, hitting Europe’s largest Bilche-Volytsko-Uherske gas storage in Lviv near NATO’s Polish border as Kyiv endures hard drone attacks in winter

Russia Uses Hypersonic Oreshnik Missile Again as Gas Facility Near NATO Border Is Hit

On the night of January 8, Russia carried out its second recorded combat launch of the hypersonic Oreshnik missile, marking another major escalation in its long-range strike capability. The missile was fired at a critical gas storage facility in western Ukraine, specifically in Lviv Oblast, close to the city of Stryi. The target location lies roughly 70 kilometers from the Polish border, bringing the strike dangerously close to NATO territory and raising concerns across the region.

Ukrainian media outlets and independent monitoring groups confirmed that the missile struck the Bilche-Volytsko-Uherske underground gas storage facility. This site is not just a regional asset but a key part of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It is recognized as the largest underground gas storage facility in Europe. According to these reports, the Oreshnik missile deployed a MIRVs system, meaning it released multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles as it descended toward its target. Each of these reentry vehicles struck the facility at extreme speed, estimated at 10 to 11 times the speed of sound, translating to approximately 12,000 kilometers per hour.

The Bilche-Volytsko-Uherske gas storage facility has a total capacity exceeding 17 billion cubic meters. This figure represents more than 50 percent of Ukraine’s entire gas reserve capacity, underlining the strategic importance of the site. Because of this scale, the strike had immediate and widespread consequences. Local reports stated that gas pressure across the region dropped sharply right after the missile hit. As of the latest updates, gas supply has been disrupted in almost the entire Lviv Oblast, affecting households, businesses, and essential services during winter conditions.

Ukrainian media reported that the strike took place at exactly 11.45 pm local time. The timing added to the impact, as nighttime attacks complicate emergency response efforts and assessment of damage. Residents in nearby areas reported sudden outages and pressure losses shortly after the explosion, confirming the scale of the disruption caused by the missile strike.

The Oreshnik missile is described as the newest addition to Russia’s weapons arsenal. Vladimir Putin has previously claimed that no air defence system in the world is capable of intercepting the Oreshnik, a statement that has drawn global attention and concern. The missile is designed to travel at hypersonic speeds exceeding Mach 10, or roughly 12,000 to 13,000 kilometers per hour, making interception extremely difficult with current defence technologies.

Oreshnik represents a significant leap in hypersonic weapon development. In addition to its speed, it features high manoeuvrability and the ability to evade all existing air defence systems. Its MIRVs capability allows it to strike the same target multiple times or hit closely grouped targets in a single launch. The missile also uses kinetic penetrators that can destroy hardened underground facilities without relying on explosive warheads, making it especially effective against deeply buried infrastructure such as gas storage sites.

This launch marks the second time Russia has used the Oreshnik missile in combat conditions. The first use was recorded on 21 November 2024, when it was fired at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. The missile is also capable of carrying nuclear warheads, a fact that further amplifies international concern over its deployment.

At the same time, the situation across Ukraine remains tense. Latest reports indicate that Russia is also carrying out a severe drone attack on Kyiv, adding to the pressure on Ukrainian air defences and civilian infrastructure. Together, these developments highlight Russia’s continued focus on precision strikes against strategic energy and urban targets, signaling a broader pattern in its ongoing military operations.
