In Alaska, Putin demanded all of Donetsk to end the war, Trump relayed the call for peace, but Zelensky stood firm, leaving Europe uneasy and the battlefield deadlocked in a high-stakes struggle that could decide Ukraine’s fate

On 15th August (local time), Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly made a striking demand during a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska. According to a Financial Times report, Putin said Moscow would only agree to end its war if Ukraine surrendered the entire eastern Donetsk region. During the talks, Putin argued that ceding Donetsk could allow Russia to freeze the frontline, particularly across the highly contested southern zones of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Notably, Russian forces already control large portions of Donetsk, tightening Moscow’s grip on the battlefield.

Trump Conveys Message to Ukraine and Europe
Just a day later, Trump relayed the Russian demand during a joint call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and key European leaders. Instead of supporting only a temporary truce, Trump pressed for a complete settlement. He said on Truth Social: “The best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.” He further added that if progress emerged, he would arrange a follow-up meeting with Putin. Leaders on the call included German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the weight of European involvement.

Donetsk at the Heart of the Conflict
The region of Donetsk has been the epicenter of clashes since 2014, when pro-Russian separatism flared after Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. Currently, Russia holds about 70% of Donetsk, while Ukraine maintains a heavily fortified western belt of cities that serve as the backbone of its eastern defenses. Analysts note that complete Russian control over Donetsk would mark its biggest gain since late 2023, cementing Moscow’s territorial push. For Ukraine, losing Donetsk would risk destabilizing its entire eastern front.

Zelensky’s Firm Refusal
Despite mounting pressure, President Zelensky has stood firm. Media reports quoting sources close to him say he has refused to concede Donetsk under any circumstances. However, Zelensky reportedly remains open to discussing broader territorial matters with Trump during their meeting scheduled in Washington on 18th August. Some reports hinted at a potential three-way dialogue involving Putin, though the Kremlin denied this, stressing that no such plan was on the table during the Anchorage talks.

Europe’s Growing Unease
Trump’s earlier suggestions of possible land swaps unsettled European capitals. While some leaders welcomed his warning of “severe consequences” if Russia continued aggression, the Alaska meeting ultimately failed to deliver progress. Instead, Putin used the platform for global visibility, with the summit marked by red-carpet receptions and light-hearted exchanges before serious talks began.

Why Putin Wants All of Donetsk
Putin’s diplomatic demand reflects Russia’s inability to fully conquer Donetsk militarily. Since 2014, Ukraine has built a 31-mile-long fortress line of cities and defences, where Russian forces face fierce resistance. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War note that breaking through could take years under present conditions. Over the past 17 months, Moscow has poured men and machines into the battle, inching forward but at a heavy cost. If Donetsk is obtained through negotiations, Russia could next threaten Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk, forcing Kyiv to construct weaker, rushed defensive lines. Such a shift would dramatically alter the balance of power in the region, alarming Western capitals.
Alaska Talks End Without Breakthrough
Despite Trump describing the meeting as “extremely productive,” the Alaska talks yielded no breakthrough. His threats of sanctions stood in sharp contrast to the ceremonial welcome extended to Putin. The absence of Ukraine from the table also drew strong criticism, with many viewing the meeting as more symbolic than practical. Expectations of at least a ceasefire roadmap fell flat, leaving Trump to place the onus for peace on Zelensky and Europe.
