Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India. We appreciate the decision by the Amir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and home-coming of these nationals."

We wouldn’t have seen this day without the joint efforts of PM Modi and the Emir of Qatar. The personal equations that the two leaders share also helped in our release." Timeline of the Arrest and Release

On August 30, 2022, these officers found themselves detained in Doha, embroiled in a serious situation that saw them spending more than a year behind bars in a Qatari jail. They faced accusations of engaging in espionage and spying activities, with the authorities specifically alleging their involvement in spying for Israel.

The sequence of events leading to their arrest was dramatic, with Qatar's intelligence agency conducting raids at their residences, apprehending them under the cover of night. Following their arrest, they were placed in solitary confinement, a challenging ordeal given the initial lack of clarity regarding the charges against them. It was only after a considerable duration that it came to light the officers were accused of a grave offense: spying on Qatar's sophisticated submarine operations, purportedly for Israel.

The accusations stemmed from Qatar State Security's assertion that they had uncovered electronic communications which implicated the officers in espionage targeted at the nation's submarine program. Despite the gravity of these charges, the detailed evidence or the specifics of the intercepted communications were not disclosed to Indian authorities, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the entire situation.

In April of this year, allegations emerged suggesting that the former Indian Navy officers might have been "framed" by Pakistani intelligence agencies. This speculation was influenced by the situation involving Kulbhushan Yadav, a former Indian Navy commander who was seized from Iran and later incarcerated in Pakistan on espionage charges. It is believed that ISI, Pakistan's intelligence agency, used Yadav's case as a pretext to persuade Qatari authorities to take action against the eight distinguished former officers of the Indian Navy.
